1) Play public servers only to grasp the game, you'll become bored of these quickly.
2) Utilize death match servers to improve hard* skills
3) Join a team speak/vent channel that organizes random player matches to improve
your soft* skills
4) Find yourself a clan thats friendly and open and is active and regularly plays in tournaments.
5) If you eventually get to this stage you should be a competent well rounded player who plays for fun, find a clan who is on par with your skill level.
*hard skills are aim, reaction, map knowledge and your positional aptitude etc.
*soft skills are general people skills, patience and your calling* ability
*calling, your the person who controls the teams micro and macro strategies. i.e. give orders. Before you give orders you must take them first, learn the associated jargon and terminology.
