Couple BF2 noob questions

Ok, so i finally thought i'd install this on the weekend after hearing so much about it, and having it sit on my shelf for about 6 months (pc trouble >_>).

(great game btw)

Anyways, first off, is there any patches i should DL? as mentioned, my copy is ~6 months old, so i'd have imagined there are some patches/hotfixes i should have DL'd, but nothing has occured automtically, as im used to in CSS/oW etc, so im unsure if theres any extras i need (having said that, i have played online, and i would have thought that i wouldnt be able to do so without the latest version)?

Secondly, servers? I'm used to CSS/DoD listing hundreds if not thousands of servers, yet when i search on BF2, i seem to get a meagre amount at best, of which the majority have a ping of 500+ I think i've actually only found 5 or 6 'playable' servers. Is this game dying out, or am i doing something wrong :S

Also, unlocks. I want to get awards/unlocks etc, but when i refresh the server list, so far i have only come across one ranked server, and that had a ping of 800 or so. I feel kinda cheesed off that my playtime/kills/stats etc arent being recorded :\

for the record, no, im not using silly filters, just the standard has users playing / is not password protected / is not full.

punkbuster is ticked

and though i can't see it making any difference, i opted not to install that gamespy arcade rubbish

Any help is appreciated

You are only being showed the versions that you are on.
Patch it to 1.41 and thn there will be loads of servers.
Only use up to 6 filters in the server list aswell.
Also once you choose your ingame settings clear your cache file and then let the shaders sort themselves out again then Leave them alone.

No BF2 is not dying out infact it is going from strength to strength. Skill levels are much higher these days and the majority of players are looking for a team orientated server/game.
If you find the Armour maps a bit much to start with then give the IO servers a try.

Enjoy and welcome to BF2.

ahh, thanks for the reply

re: IO - i think i played on one of those servers the other day. By the name i'd imagine thats no vehicles, but i'm sure there were....

anyways, have to say, the jets (though hard as nails to control ><), and the oil fields map are already two of the best gaming moments i've had in quite a while :)

IO = Infantry only
:D

It seems that its easier to get a good game nowadays on BF2 as a lot of the idiots have gone over to BF2142. I find it really hard to find a decent game of 2142.

I can fly helis fine with mouse and keyboard, however i get seriously owned when trying to fly the jets. I imagine most people use joysticks or control pads. Best thing to do is to load a single player game and practice your flying skills in there as its very difficult to get near them ingame, and if you keep crashing your just going to annoy people.

EDIT: lots of tutorials out there, some text and video ones, also some good sites that tell you areas in maps that are hard to get to but give a good view of the battlefield.

EDIT 2: When it comes to taking down helis the best method ive found is to get into an AA missile defence, find the heli and wait for the lock on tone but dont fire. The heli will automatically fire flares so wait until they have disappeared and then get tone, fire both missiles. This can usually take a chopper down.

Im late getting into BF2 BUT so glad I did ! Cracking game :D Try ticking (sticking a red X) the box NO Vehicles when you search for game servers that way you get a list of IO only :) As for unlocks I opted for sniper rifle then G3 but my latest one is the Medic (forget the rifle .. ) and its a good gun and with medic kit you pick up more points quicker. Health and revive points etc.

Oops should be 'Yellow' X not red (guess the red was my eyes going to bed after 3am ... again :D )

yeah, dont even bother with the sniper rifles, they are pants.

imo the medic is the best unlock early on, it will help you get more points earlier on and so more unlocks. its a good class for learnign the game and the tactics involved.

Although, the support class is also very good in a IO game.

Although the G36e is an Awesome weapon i really never advise this as the first unlock. The default medic weapons are awesome and don't really need upgrading in the early stages. Remember if you go Medic your job is to Heal & revive and you should only be using your weapon as a last resort. You keep the fighters alive and they keep you alive ;) If they take your men out then they will be wounded so a only a few bullits are usually needed to waste them, once wasted you can then revive your fighters.

Best thing to do is pick other players kits up that you find laying around and give them a test drive. Also give yourself some time to find your favourite class, then you can pick your unlocks to suit yourself.
Don't get hung up on having unlocks though as the defaut weapons are great in just about every class except AT. As an AT dude i couldn't live without my DAO-12, having said that i only play IO servers these days and Never go AT.

Just have a play, enjoy the game and post back when you have a better idea of what you require. I personally will talk about BF2 for a whole week :)

aye, i've found certain classes to suit my playstyle a lot more than others

special ops is just awesome

the only one i have any 'gripes' with at all in fact, is, as mentioned, the sniper - 8 shots per kill, no thanks :P

also, unlocks;

on some servers i seem to have 2 guns available per class, even though having played on no ranked servers, i can't possibly have unlocked them myself - im assuming this is default?

and how do i know which is the better of the two? :S i know i can have a look at the possible unlocks somewhere from the menu.

i just seem to be going with whatever looks more futuristic atm :p

Yeah you pretty much have to patch to 1.41 to get anything decent. Also try the 50klicks servers, they usually have good team work there and the admins are usually active.

Medic is probably the best class to start with as they have some of the best rifles and its fairly easy to rack up huge scores by healing/reviving.

Sniper class is probably the most daunting for a beginner because you'll probably find its almost impossible to get a kill at first. Don't worry though its pretty simple once you master a few basic tactics:

1.) The key to sniping is getting head shots. Whenever you have someone in sight always aim at the forehead and if its from very long range, try aiming just above the head.

2.) Never fire immediately, always track them untill they are standing still. If you must shoot whilst they are moving, always aim a little in front, preferably whilst they are running in a straight line (not sprinting). Unfortunately there is no guaranteed way of doing this since there are many variables which affect exactly where you should whilst the target is moving, its simply a case of 'practice makes perfect'.

3.) If you are spotted and the target is closing in on you, it's most likely that you won't be able to get a head shot. Your best tactic here is to fire at the torso; two shots will do. If you can't get the second shot off, pull out your pistol and finish them off or throw a grenade. Once you kill someone who has already spotted you, relocate asap.

4.) Try to get the L96A1 unlock as soon as possible. The default USMC M24 is very similiar, but takes longer to reload and is slighlty less accurate but should do. The default MEC/Chinese sniper rifles require slightly different tactics. They are considerably less accurate than the other rifles but have semi-auto fire which means they work best at medium range; getting headshots is still possible but if need be you can use it like a machine gun. :o

5.) Try not to camp in one place to much; squad up and move with your team, trying to stay a little behind them. Position yourself in places with a clear, long ranged view of the battlefield, but also with lost of cover and good escape routes should you be pursued.

6.) Players mounted on gun turrets are easy targets as are camping snipers; you can use the same tactics when facing snipers but take into account that they'll also be trying to get a headshot and that they have less health than other classes.

7.) Claymores are your best friend. :D

Apart from that, I think the AT class is the most fun to play with.

Just thought of something else that had been bothering me.

With CS/Steam, you chose your acc. name, then a seperate player name, which you can change whenever you fancy.

Am i right in thinking in BF2, once i have my Acc. name, my awards/rank etc are all tied to that name and i will always be seen by said name in-game? if so, i should probably try and come up with something at least semi-decent before i start playing on ranked servers

And regarding that, if someone chose to join a clan, would that then mean that they'd have to create a new account to have the clan tags on their name, and therefore loose all medals/awards/unlocks etc?

Your name/stats/points are all linked and cannot be changed without losing your stats/points.
There is a box which you are allowed to enter up to 6 characters/clan tag which will cover joining/leaving a clan.

The special ops sniper rifle does 90% dmage.

Could someone please tell me what gun does 100% damage - 1 hit 1 kill as I thought this was not possible. Originally the special ops sniper rifle did !00% damage but was changed from what I gather so what gun does do it and is that not wrong?

i didnt realise the stats were so detailed

i'm liking the 1:4 K:D ratio, and the 21 death streak :p

im semi-embarassed to actually start now, gonna have to suffer some appalling stats

^^
Tbh, sometimes joining a squad can hinder you and the team as there are so many idiots out there that havent got a clue about tactics. Even if you join a squad it can pay to go solo now and then.

I usually find that one of the city maps with the hotel in the centre attracts fools. You will get teams of people that just keep attacking the first capture point no matter how many times they get killed.

I usually sneak off to the left, over the hill up the road and capture the top right point and then down the hill to the bridge. This usually draws enough of the enemy away from the first flag to allow capture. Or if you want, you can go straight for the bridge by going over the wall and running along its base parallel with the train tracks. best to be a medic to heal the injuries from jumping the wall.

Oh, and another tip, dont foget your parachute when jumping off high areas :D

Enviable stats

The death streak was early on, i think i had a huge "kill me" sign on my back !

a lot of it was down to lag or being useless.

OK useless :D

idiots everywhere it seems .... hmm

ICEMAN, squading up is more an advantage to you as in you should stay alive a little longer and get to watch what other players do tactically ..
and i dont mean insta prone or bunny hop
gluck and try to have fun, learn the game mechanics and dont get fustrated and where possible use voicecomms
