Hi. As the title said I'm a few hours into oblivion (over a few days) and now its running really bad and stuttering with 1/2 second stutters, sometimes closing down with the 'windows has encountered an error..' message. My specs are as follows: E2140, 2 GIG ballistics PC6400, 8800 GTS 320 MB, Gigabyte 965P-DS3, Corsair HX520W. Nothings been overlcloked.

I'm running 1024 X 768, large textures, all shadows off.

The thing is when I started the game proper last week it seemed to be running fine, inside and outside scenes. Over the weekend I downloaded WMP11 and it kept on crashing my PC really bad so I uninstalled it and ever since then I've had crashes and instability in Oblivion.

I'm also using a 2 year old IDE HD, not a SATA drive.

I'm thinking of possibly reinstalling the game. How do you back up save games? How do you disable the autosave feature?

i would say your cpu is seriously hampering you if its not overclocked. I was having framerate issues with an x2 4400 and my 8800gtx, went to a c2d at 3 ghz and it all went away.

However it still sounds like there is another problem as well as your cpu.

xp or vista?

I remember hearing somit about a bug in oblivion or the expansion pack that after a few hrs performance seriously deteriorates. I think they fixed it in a patch.

Yeah it could be my CPU, I gonna try a bit over overclocking this weekend, but its strange thats its started to stutter now and not at the beginning of my game. Even inside is stuttery now.

The game is patched up and i'm using the latest drivers.

The save games reside in My documents\my games\oblivion. Copy the files elsewhere. Install the game then start and save a game, then quit (the directory isn't created until you save a game). Now copy the files back to their original location. If you are running mods and the old and current mods don't match you will get message warning you of this - just agree to proceed.

Most of the autosaves (on inside/outside, sleep, rest etc) can be turned off using the "Options" choice on the main animated menu (the one with the map in the background) under (IIRC) "Gameplay". Not a good idea though, you should save as often as possible under at least three different names.

And you know you can use the console to name saves, right?

It can also happen straight away, theres a lot of ppl have games running like **** when they first load em up, and they have to ALT+TAB out and back in to sort em, have you tried that.
