Couple of problems with my new build

So I finally managed to save up enough money to upgrade from my trusty Q9550. All the kit arrived on Saturday (thanks OCUK) and I got everything assembled by Sunday afternoon.

At first everything seemed OK. I got the RAID set up and installed Win7 with no problems.
When I opened the side of the case to check if everything was OK I noticed 2 problems.
1. I am using 2 x 2TB WD Black HDs and they are both too hot to touch. I had 1TB Blacks in my old PC and they are only warm. How can I tell if these are faulty? I can understand one of them being dodgy but they both do exactly the same thing.
2. My Corsair H100 cooler sounds like an old hard drive chattering away. The noise gets quieter if you put the case on it's side but it never goes away. I left it running all afternoon yesterday and it isn't getting any better.

Any suggestions? Will the H100 get better? Are my HDs too hot?
I hate RMA'ing things because of the hassle and postage expense. Do I send the H100 back to OCUK or Corsair?

Thanks in advance.

Use HWmonitor, HDtune or similar to checkout the hard drive temps.

I usually aim for no more that 30c at 20c ambient (i.e 10c delta temp).

Do you have fans blowing across you hdds?

Yes. I have the Corsair 550D case so there are 2 120mm fans on the front of the case and both blow directly over the HDs.
They are so hot I cannot hold my finger on them for over 1 second. Surely they must be faulty?

Yes the HDs are spaced apart.

Yes I have tapped the pump and the cables but this doesn't help. Also, the radiator is not even slightly warm??

Yes I have tried putting the case on its side. This makes the noise a little bit better but not much.

This is frustrating. RMA information is very hard to understand.
Can I send hard drives back that seem to work OK? Surely that amount of heat is not right. I just can't find any definitive information.

You will not be able to send the drives back as they work OK and have no issues apart from the fact You think they are too warm.

I would however give the H100 until next week and if its still making that noise then send it back.

Is the noise comming from the pump?

Thanks for your advice on the H100. The hard drives are not too warm they are very very hot. I don't want to trust them with my valuable data because there is no way they can survive for long at that temperature.
And as I said, my old 1TB blacks do not get hot at all - just warm.

Fortunately, mine is not form this batch number. It does seem like there are lots of problems with this cooler.
Maybe it's just a rubbish product?

Is it really likely to get better after a week or should I just send it back now?

I used a H100 for 6 months or so, it wasnt too noisey but did get worse overtime as i think the pump can started to get a bit rattley. Aparently trapped air during the manufacturing process can occur with these closed loop designs, only way around ive heard is to have the radiator orientated vertically so the tubes are at the top as there is a little space for the air to collect so it isnt shooting around the loop causing noise. This is only really possible with the H80 etc since its a single rad and is usually fitted to the rear 120mm fan mount, since you have the H100 its always going to be horizontally orientated in the top of the case.

I'd give it the 1 week and then make your move on a possible RMA/Replacment.

Thanks for your advice - I really do appreciate it.

Still stuck with £300 worth of unusable hard drives though. Sigh.

Well the drives are not unusable.

If you sent them to WD they would just throw them straight back at you.

Can you take a picture of inside of your case?

Also check the HDD temps?

It dosen't really matter that much if a HDD gets hot as the only things affected are the boards and they would have to get to well over 70*c to damage the solder on them.

Sorry for my ranting. It's just a little frustrating when you spend so much money on good quality components and they are not what you expected.

I seriously think the drives could be reaching that kind of temperature, even with the case fans blowing on them. I'll install something to read the HD temps tonight and post back.
What's the best (freeware) program to use?

I would just try HWmointor.
