Couple of problems with new build.

Hey, not long set up my first every system but there appears to be a couple of problems. The first(1) of which is that the system does not seem to pick up on my HDD, although it does pick up on my SSD (where I have just installed windows).

The HDD and SDD are wired the same, the only thing i can think of is that the SATA power cable have multiple SATA power attachments (the long L) so I've used a single power cable to connect both the SDD and HDD to the psu. I was only provided with 2 of this SATA power cords and the only connects the DVD/RW to the psu so I has to use one to make 2 connection and it appears to have that facility as part of the cable.

This is the HDD ive used: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-025-TS

The next problem (2) which I feel might just come down to my inexperience, is that I have installed the gpu and used the software provided to install the drivers (not yet updated due to lack of lengthy ethernet which i will sort today) after which there was a reboot.

The problem is I see no increase in graphics quality - by the looks of things its still running from the inbuilt mobo gpu - and when i do windows test centre thingy - it gives me a 1 rating for graphics. I am running with the gpu connected to my TV, there is a VGA adapter included in the gpu case (7850 btw) which i plug into the longer port on my gpu (not the hdmi one - not sure of the name!) and connect my vga into that and into the TV.

Not sure if i'm doing something wrong here

Thanks for the help!

You may need to go into windows disk management and allocate a drive letter to the HDD for it to be seen in windows.

If there is no disk with a drive letter missing in windows, it could be that you need to enter bios and check the disk settings for it to be recognised.

Alternatively try changing the SATA port on the motherboard.

You should get the graphics working when you can download the latest drivers for it. Again its possible you may need to change the bios setting but usually it is automatic. The port you are using is a DVI port.

Your first problem is very common.

Click the start orb and in the search bar type "computer", you will see a link to computer management at the top of the window. CLick this, then storage and finally disk management. From here you can see your drives and add a drive letter so you can use it.

Forget the disks that come with the mobo and GPU, anything on them is out of date. DOwnload the latest drivers from their websites. If you are using the Z77-D3H it has reported problems with GPUs till you update the BIOS.

If you tell us what kit you have it will help us help you

Hey. I'll try this with the disk management soon and get back to you on how that works, thanks.

As for GPU - youre right I am using the z77-d3h. Not exactly sure how to update bios if you can help with that?

Thanks.

Mobo BIOS downloads link, you can find the drivers and software too in the drop down boxes.

Save the BIOS file to a USB pendrive. When you start the rig press the end button on the keyboard to start the BIOS update utility. It takes a couple of mins, the mobo has a dual BIOS as a safety feature, god forbid something goes wrong.

It's also worth going into the BIOS and checking the sata mode is ACHI. By default it's been IDE when I've used that mobo. If you have installed the OS to the SSD in IDE mode you REALLY want to be using ACHI. Simplest way is to change the setting in the BIOS and reinstall the OS, there are work arounds you can google if you have gone to far into the install.

Hey so I just pressed END, taking me into Q-Flash. I selected update BIOS and selected the F.18 download that i downloaded from above link. It told me 'incorrect file size' and i couldnt proceed.

There was another option including saving something... but i was scared to click it haha:(

Help?

Did you copy the file straight to the pendrive? It's an exe file, if you run it in the OS it will extract the files which you need to put on the USB pendrive

Boot into windows. Double click on the file and run it, this will extract the files for you. You can choose where the files are extracted to, might as well pick the USB drive ;) Restart and press end to get back into QFlash, dont update the BIOS in windows itself that's a bad idea.
