Hey all,

Just got a couple of questions that you may be able to clear up for me :)...

Firstly...

Why when you first download an application, for the first few uses the app icon is:

It normally has an icon after a while of use, but it seems strange :p

Secondly...

Is there an app or something that people use that will bring full maximisation to the Mac environment?

When I go to click Maximise (Or Zoom as they put it), it enlarges it only to the amount that is necessary. But I would prefer it if it was maximised to the fullscreen (Bar the dock of course :))

Thanks,

Marky

The app icon should show correctly straight away. The icon you see normally happens when you remove an app and all is left is a non functioning launcher.

You could try Moom or an app that gives Windows 7 style snapping/resizing:
BetterTouchTool
Cinch
Divvy

That's normal behaviour for the app icon - It appears like that to show you that it's a new application that's not been launched (there's probably some technical term for it) and you get a warning when you open it for the first time. Once it's been opened once then the correct icon should appear.

The Zoom button zooms. It doesn't maximize, it's not a maximize button and Apple don't call it that anywhere. You can't change the default behaviour within the OS as it does what it's intended to but there are third party apps which allow tweaking of that behaviour.

I've never seen an icon like that so I'm not sure...

As for "maximising" this seems to be one of the most difficult things for former Windows users to get used to. The Zoom button makes the window big enough for the content. Maximising would simply waste screen estate. I suggest you try to get used to it but if not like the poster above has said there are apps that will break the default system behaviour for you. Moom is probably the best.

Any apps foreign to the system are treated as 'quarantined' until you agree to the potential hazards of opening it on first run.

If you are running Lion, you can try this tweak called Maximizer.

I googled it and apparently it can happen because the Launch Services database is slow to update. If it's not showing the icon for several uses try reloading the dock. Open terminal and type:

Terminal said:
killall Dock
