Ok I wont bore you with the details of WHY I want to do these things, but was wondering if anyone knows whether -

- I can pull out a hot spare drive of a running server without anything going mental (its a Sun RAID5/6 card, which is one of the dual core Adaptec SAS cards)

- I can install an OS on a single disk and later create a mirror of that drive without having to reinstall everything? Thats a Sun RAID1/0 card, which is LSI IIRC...

Ta!:D

On RAID 5 you can pull out a disk and it will carry on regardless, maybe a little slower, but it will still work.

Don't think so, as most configuration of RAID is done in the cards BIOS and usually wipes all the disks, create the mirror first.

The disk I want to pull out is a hot spare for the array, not an active member. I know it'll carry on working but I know with these cards if you trigger an alert you get a VERY loud beeping which needs a reboot to clear...
