It's myostatin that prevents extreme muscle mass, so you would want less of it, not more.
I don't think any of the cows in those pictures will need milking....those arn't udders

They are also tasty, some of the best steaks I ever had were when I lived in Belgium - exceedingly lean, and as they have an overabundance of muscle that doesn't get used much, very tender too.
As for being in pain, not per se, but there was a problem with giving birth naturally a few years back, however, that's been bred out of them IIRC.

All I can say is the steaks I had in Belgium were superior to anything I've tasted since - just need to be sure not to overcook it as, with a lower fat content, that's easy to do.

Its only the breed, Belgian Blue, extremely good sire, but many bad genetics with the breed, 80% have to be A.Ied due to the bull not being able to serve the cow, and because the calf is born with such good confirmation, especially around the shoulders it is very rare that a pedigree Belgian Blue cow will give birth naturally, usually it is done by C section.
They are not used for milking (someone commented further up) They will quite often be crossed onto a Holstein/Ayrshire or such like to produce good bull calves and also some rather good heifers..

I'm pretty sure those are bulls, not cows. Certainly the ones with penises are bulls. It's a bit of a giveaway.
There's a bull nearly 7 feet tall somewhere and it's all the more striking for looking like a standard black and white cow. I thought the picture was fake, but it isn't.
For everyones information by the looks of it, with all livestock (that means Cattle, Sheep, Horses, Pigs, Poultry etc...) there are mass amounts of 'breeds' between each of these species of livestock..
The colour of cattle does not indicate whether it is male or female, neither does it if they've got horns or not, some breeds have horns and others don't, for safety purposes most cattle are de-horned at 6-7weeks old.
The only thing showing whether a beast is male or female is the genitles it has (Unless Freemartin).
Most of the breeds in this thread so far have been pictures of Beef stock (sucklers) and not Dairy stock..
Any other questions?
