Those of you who follow the 'pro' gaming scene may be interested to see that the Cyberathelete Professional League has decided to use Quake3 for it's duel tournaments and Counterstrike for it's team events: http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1144318
I must admit I am somewhat suprised, as I always felt that due to sponsorship commitments, demanding games would tend to be chosen for such things. I mean lets be honest, Nvidia aren't going to sell many Geforce9-Ultra-Deluxe-GTX-XPs to players of games with engines released in the last millenium, are they? Sure, you've got your fatal1ty branded stuff, and I/O devices like mouse, keyboard, headphones, monitor etc, but I can't see the likes of Intel/AMD/ATI/Nvidia getting too exciting about this.
I guess part of this comes down to the fact that some of the older games simply have a better infrastructure for the 'pro' scene; all the way from the tournament mods used, right down to the demo/GTV spectator experience. Personally I don't think Q3/CS can match Quakeworld in terms of the skill requirement/gameplay experience, but it's a step in the right direction.
