This is an odd one, my GPU on idle sits at a whopping 75-78'c and de-clocks itself when I try and use games.

Now, this really doesn't make sence as the case has two 120mm fans keepin it below 30'c and the CPU is overclocked to 2.5GHz from 1.8 (opty) and doesn't pass 40'c under load yet the GPU is cooking all the time!

I checked the seating of the fan on the 6800 Ultra and its fine and obviously the fan is spinning away as it should.

Any suggestions, its very odd.

The gpu won't throttle until it hits 135 degrees, at least thats the threshold on my gt. Those temps are fine really, certainly by no means 'whopping' for a gpu.

What makes you think its 'de clocking' itself under load?
What temperature is it getting to under load?
Have you cleaned out the heatsink recently?
Are you using the stock heatsink?

I believe the stock heatsink uses a blower fan and they are very prone to clogging up with dust.

Well it throttles (115'c) and drops me to desktop, never used to do that and its relatively cool today.

GPU used to to sit in the late 30's early 40's and only recently has it shot up. Blasted any dust away from the stock cooler, didn't make much difference. :(

Well they were never particularly good coolers iirc.

If you want to avoid voiding your warranty try some new thermal paste.

115 is a little toasty.

Its weird that it worked fine before and now its just turned inefficient, might try some fresh paste and a new fan or just grab an arctic cooler.

I expect its just degraded over time as the thermal paste has dried up or the fan has worn out and slowed down or something.
