Hi all! Happy new year!! :)
hope you're not too hung over!

So I'm specing a new system and I'll be gaming, doing 3D and video editing. Mainly using adobe after effects, Photoshop and cinema 4d. Using adobe after effects more than anything else though. (probably getting a 5850 or 6950, wanting 4 gig of ram, upgrading to 6 gig later and probably will overclock the cpu to a stable amount)

So im just wondering i should be looking for with CPU's in regards to 3D and video editing.

My queries -

is it the more cores the better with 3d/video?

Does hyper threading really make that much of a difference?
(i5 vs i7)

are there any programs that use hyper threading?
(and if a program doesn't will the i7 perform at the same speed as an i5?)

I5 2500k or the i7 920?
(I know the i7 has HT, but the 2500k looks powerful and the 2600k is looking very over priced)

Hope you can help!
feel free to offer any general cpu advice! thanks!

Thanks all :)

Why not try one of the 6 core Phenoms? They are great for the price, especially for video editing.

+1

As far as I understand more cores is definitely better when it comes to video editing. If you're opting for an i7 though the hyoerthreading gives you a virtual 8 core CPU, so that's even better.

I would wait and see how Sandybridge performs. If you have a large budget then go for the i7 930 (They don't do the 920 anymore). If you have a low bugdet then go the the Phenom II X6 1055.

Wiked, thanks for the help dude.
Do the 6 core phenoms perform as well as the i5 and i7 for gaming?
(i know the i5 760 seems to be the standard intel cpu for gaming)

thanks dude, i will wait and see, they look pretty good.
The phenoms seem like excellent value, so yeh they would be a good budget option cheers.
