Possibly I suppose.

Give this a try:

run>>msconfig>>boot>>advanced options>>number of processors

See what it says there.

If the box for number of processors is ticked then untick it.
 
I've beem out for a few hours and thought there'd be some progress in this thread.

I assume this relates to an actual problem and not a hypothetical situation.

Have you tried what I posted above?

ive got a i7 2600k that appears to be faulty running on 1 core ive tried everything else it shows up as 4 core in the bios but when u try to install wins7 on 4 cores it fails only thing i hadnt tried was a bios update as when i put an i5 2500k and i7 2700k in the setup installs no problem
