I'm quite confused at what is happening, the fan is quite quiet but then it goes really loud and it's annoying me to ****.

So is there like a controller/software to set an optimal speed?

Have a look in the BIOS, there might be options to setup temperature ranges or max fan speeds.

What motherboard are you using.

It's actually my aunties pc, thought I'd try and fix it for her. It's a P4 cpu so not exactly up-to-date. I may have that sandra software somewhere.

Whip the cover off and get rid of any dust. Might even want to grab a tube of AS5 and remount the cooler. Sometimes that's enough without sticking your hand in your pocket.

A silent heatsink might be what they're after, it's just a crappy interwebs box really tbh. It would be totally silent doesn't have a GPU.

Well, the old stock coolers always were poor. It could also be that the fan bearings are shot, and replacing just the fan would do it. Even if they're not shot a better perfoming fan would go a long way to silencing it. Although I've no idea if it'll have a standard 80mm fan in it or not.

I'm using a fanless sythe mini ninja, does the job for just internet and watching movies. I think now adays a lot of the heatsinks can be used fanless with right air flow.
