CPU and Mobo upgrade ~ £500

Ok, bit of a "spec me" thread this one.

My mate has asked for help with upgrading his father in laws PC (yes really :p) and I'm a bit out of the loop with whats hot and whats....not

This will be used mainly for video editing (holiday footage as he travels allot)
Currently he has a quad core phenom CPU (unsure of exact spec) that drags it's heels a bit too much.

I advised going Intel would be a good idea as I've heard they are better at pure number crunching, but I'm not sure what one would suit.
He has 8 Gig of DDR2 RAM, 800watt PSU. Let me know if you need any other info.
So yeah, new CPU and Mobo for video editing for £500 :)
 
Unfortunatly none of the sandybridge CPUs have the memory controller for DDR2, DDR3 only. £500 will net you an i7-2600K with a suitable motherboard and 8GB of DDR3 ram though.
I'm sure somebody will be able to provide you with more information on a suitable motherboard.
 
only thing we really need is the make/model of the PSU and the make/model of the case (so i dont spec anything that wont fit)

however, the PSU is ok, this will do fine:
