I'm going to guess the 6300 you are referring to is the older e6300 1.83Ghz C2D (though it could have been an Intel Pentium Dual Core e6300 2.8Ghz).
What is temperature of your CPU and northbridge and what are the voltages?
Also, what motherboard, RAM, PSU and GPU are you using? When does it crash?: In games, 3Dmark, prime95, microft office, idle, loading into windows?
If you want new mobo and CPU - a very nice option is this AMD core and this motherboard (just under budget). Your current DDR2 RAM can be reused. If you want to do some overclocking check that your current 3rd part heatsink can fit on AM2 boards.
