CPU and NB Temps Related?

Greetings,

I just installed an Akasa sink & fan to replace the stock AMD set that came with the AthlonXp 2000. I've already noticed a nice (10c) drop in temp on the cpu as according to the bios reading and using winbond hardware doctor that came bundled with the MB (Abit KD7A). WooHoo.

There's been a couple of "side effects" that I'm curious about though.

I've noticed that the NB temp has also reduced as well, about the same amount.

Also the bios detects cpu fan failure but the fan is obviously turning. I disabled the auto-shutdown and alarm (which stops as the OS boots up BTW) and the system seems stable (so far!).

Are these common side-effects or could there be a problem on the horizon?

Appreciate any input! ;)

Is your new cooler plugged into the CPUFAN header on your motherboard? If it isnt then the Fan failure warning is to be expected because your motherboard hasnt detected a fan plugged in

Yes it is and I checked the seating a couple of times to be sure and it's secure.

I had a similar problem with a fan replacement on a P3 system a while ago. The stock fan was replaced but the new fan only had two wires leading the the bios complaining of fan failure but that system ran for ages after that.

The new fan has 3 wires that's why I'm not so sure this time around.

To be honest, if the fans spinning and the temps are fine, then stability will be fine aswell :)

I've been told before that if you really want to remove the fan error warning, you can actually cut the fan header off the old fan, and simply plug it into the socket on the motherboard without the fan atached. This MAY work, or it may not :p Just luck really, you could try it if you wern't that bothered about the old fan

 ...sounds a bit drastic. I'll let it run and have the bios monitor the NB instead and keep an eye on the temps/speeds etc. I've got desktop monitors for temps that lets you know what's happening.

Have you had experience with the NB temp dropping after cooling the CPU? Is this common?

Well the NB would drop in temperature because the CPU will be giving off less heat, thus cooling the case temp.

Is your NB passive? Mine is and its around 36c~ so i guess thats fine :/

edit: Welcome to the forums! :p Make sure you read the FAQ

The NB has a fan(noisy little fekker too) and was running about 50-60c, since the new cpu hsf went in its down to around 40-50c. I haven't measured the ambient temps yet but I'll check it out.

May try a passive solution as the whole purpose of the excersise was to silence the case a bit.

Thanks for the welcome (and the advice), I promise I'll behave!! :D

There is one other solution to this little conundrum - If the fan speed is very low, the board may be detecting it as not spinning.

Have you monitored the noise levels at all ?

I know from personal experience that my Silverstone fan when turned right down to something like 900 RPMs the rotation speed drops to 0 on my monitoring software.

Just a possibility.

Good point.

The CPU fan is certainly slower at around 2500rpm compared to 4k rpm on the old 40mm fan (new ones 80mm). Both the bios and hardware doc seem to detect the speed OK.

I'll play with the speed settings and see what results I get.

Thanks
