just finished a hardline build for friend but the run from the gpu to the cpu is making me mad as it doesnt line up and required an s fitting to meet. would it make any difference to the temps if I turned the EK block 90 degrees so I could match the connectors better- apart from the velocity rgb being on side and not the bottom

The ekwb coldplate (assuming it's one of the ones I think it is) is designed to have the fins cut horizontally over the processor to pull heat away from the cores as efficiently as possible.

If you look at this link it shows how they are cut. https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-quantum-magnitude-coldplate-flat-copper

By rotating it 90 degrees, those fins become vertical and the cores aren't spread out underneath them. Rather, they are all "lined up" under the same ones vertically and you end up concentrating the heat into maybe 4 or 5 of the fins, as opposed to all of them. I think this is true for both Intel and AMD.

The processor will still be cooled, but some of the cores will run hotter and you're wasting the potential of the waterblock.

It'll work, but it won't work as well as it could.

I can't say how much worse it will work though!

I think this image helps explain it better than I can word it, the arrows being the direction of water flow across the fins.

It depends on the design of the coldplate and the layout of the cpu chips. If you do a search for reviews of the block you are using if they tested it rotated 90 degrees it will be listed as a "goofy mount". Sometimes it makes no difference, sometimes it's a degree or two better and other times can be a degree or two worse. There's no way to be sure without checking reviews or failing that, trying both ways.

thanks for the replies- Ijust looked at the Goofy mount and it looks as if it is worse by about .5 degree at most so will give it a go and see
