CPU Bottleneck 780Gtx Sli

Hey,

I just got two 780Gtx cards but I'm not getting great frame rates. On 1080 gaming with everything set to ultra I'm getting the following frame rates.

Battlefield Bad Company 2: 80 - 120fps
Battlefield 4 Beta: 35 - 70fps
Splinter Cell Blacklist: 60 - 100fps
GTA 4: 30 - 50fps

I'm thinking it's my system that's causing a bottleneck. I'm currently running with the following specs:

Intel 2600 i7 @ 3.2ghz (first generation)
Asus Rampage II
6GB DDR2
850 Watt PSU

I've read that CPU power doesn't matter so much when it comes to gaming but perhaps I'm wrong!

Thanks,

Have you got Hyper Threading enabled in your bios? Do you have the K version of the i7 2600? If you have the K version you should overclock to at least 4.5ghz and this will remove most of the bottleneck. If you can get the cpu higher, all the better.

not for BF4, good news is you could slap in a 990x which would help a lot.

Your CPU at stock will almost definitely give you a bottleneck in BF4 with those cards.

Check your GPU usage with something like MSI Afterburner, then apply a mild overclock to 4.0-4.2Ghz with between 1.25 and 1.3v should be sufficient. Then check your GPU load again, you want both GPUs to max out at at least 90-95% for the bottlneck gap to have been reduced :). Make sure to play for at 5 to 10 minutes to be sure too.

Thanks all for your suggestions.. I don't know if it's the K version. I got it when the i7's first came out but haven't overclocked it too much due to temperature problems, despite having a massive cooler.

At first I thought my PSU was the problem but the system seems pretty stable!

HT is enabled... wil have a play tonight and see how it goes :)

I was going to upgrade to the new Sandybridge-E processor but as I'll just be using it for gaming I'm not sure what benefit it would have!

That's a second gen i7 not a first gen. Which is good for you as it broadens your upgrade options without changing mobo :)

Edit: Though the mobo appears to be LGA1366 - now I'm confused

Edit2: Given your 6GB RAM I'm leaning towards it being 1366 triple channel ram which means the CPU isn't a 2600

I don't know then! It's at least 3 - 4 years old so it may very well be triple channel.

I'm upgrading from an AMD 6990. Starting to think it's not going to give substantial performance gains over what I had!

Download CPUZ that will be able to tell you your chip, motherboard and RAM.

there is no Intel board that will take i7 and DDR2 RAM.

so get your facts together and find out what's the mobo and CPU you have, then we can move forward.

If its 6GB ram and he says first gen i7 it'll be a 9XX series.

If its running @ 3.2GHz prior to overclocking it'll be a 960 / 965. If your counting turbo then it could be a 950 (like i have).

Get it o/c to 4GHz to sort the bottleneck to a large degree and for BF4 make sure hyperthreading is enabled.
