My current rig is

AMD Athlon II X4 Quad Core 630 2.80GHz (Socket AM3)
XFX HD 5830 1GB - GDDR5 SDRAM

It's starting to struggle with newer games and I'm looking to start upgrading.

Ideally I'm thinking i5 4690k+mobo and a GTX 970 but I'm a bit strapped for cash at the minute.

If I was to just pick up the gfx card first would my current cpu be a bottleneck?

I have a q6600 and am looking at doing the same, upgrade the graphics now, and the rest when I can afford it. Sure, the card will be bottlenecked, but still a hell of a lot better than the 8800 GTX I have atm.

That's the advice I have got from these forums any how. Either that, or plump for a cheaper 2nd hand card with a view to upgrading that later too, but I think I would rather get a better one and keep it.

yes get the card is will be a lot better, the CPU is 100% going to gold it back but there will also be a massive improvement

but that said for 970 cash, you can get an i5 and motherboard

GPU will give you a huge increase in performance, a low end CPU can still power the big games as most of the work is done in the GPU as it's quicker.

is the CPU a black edition, and is your mother board upto over clocking.

what is your full set up.
mobo
cpu
ram
PSU
and so on
