CPU choice

Hi

I am looking to build a new PC.

I just have a question about the suitability of the processor, the choice being between the i5 or i7 and which model within those ranges.

I play a lot of a game whose client only utilises a single core of the processor, but it is quite CPU intensive, so the more power that core has the better. The turbo boost function would also help in this area.

The CPU of choice seems to be the i5-2500k which I believe can be clocked to about 4.2 using the built in automatic function.

So, my questions are:

From what I have read, the main advantage of the i7 over the i5 is the additional functionality of the hyperthreading/extra cores etc. There doesn’t appear to be any significant extra performance of the Cpu. So bearing in mind that the game I play most of, only uses one core, is it worth the extra cost ? If not, as the i5 chip has been around for a while, is it still the one to get ?

The i5-2500k seems to be a 2nd generation chip, while there are now 3rd generation i5’s (though different models) around for a similar price. Is there a comparable one of these, and would it give better performance?

Grateful for any answers and other advice you can give.

Disregard the I7 for gaming hyperthreading will have no benefit to you.

The I5 3750k Ivybridge is the latest cpu from intel and the one to go for, its approx !0% faster than the 2500k sandybridge.

From everything I've read, the i5 is the superior processor atm, people with i7's are just under a severe placebo effect.

Don't go AMD. :D

I would go for i5 3570K instead of 2500K as it's approx 10% faster, with new features and same price

Generally i7 are use for heavy CPU usage applications

What is the name of the single core game you play the most of? and what CPU do you have at the moment?

The game I play is Eve Online, it is CPU intensive and only utilises one core.

I currently have an AMD Phenom II X6 Black Edition 1090T 3.2GHz , which is struggling, unsurprisingly. During heavy gameplay, the one core is pretty much at 90-100%, the other 5 are idling at 10%.

Then I advise you either buy a co-processor or train skills to reduce CPU usage. The Electronics skill will boost your CPU output by 5% for every level you have it trained.

LOL, already trained to 5:)

So, as it appears you also play, what hardware do you have and how does it perform under heavy play ?

Haven't tried it in large scale warfare yet but lag in that will be down 99% to connection (eve server can't handle the battle at high fps) and 1% graphics card. Its recording 85fps when doing small low sec roams. And level 4 missions , incursions.

Nah, I have guys in my fleets who are getting 40+ fps during large fleet battles.

My AMD Phenom II gets 60 fps (which is about the max with interval 1) during small roams and when I used to do incursions. It’s when the fleet numbers crank up that the grunt of the CPU becomes a big factor.
