How would i know if my computer's compatable with a CPU, i'm planning to purchase AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000+ 2.60GHz (Socket AM2) - OEM. Currently i'm using an AMD Athlon 64 3500+

Cheers

p.s. sorry if i sound like an idiot, havent slept in days :o

do you know what socket your current motherboard is? If its AM2 then it will be compatible as long as it has a BIOS that supports the CPU.

It would be far easier to answer if we knew your motherboard. ;)

Some AMD motherboards needed a BIOS flash to allow dual core, however that's pretty rare and even if you did need an upgrade, you can normally get them straight off the manufacturer's website.

Damn, i'm such a TW@ for not reading your responses. As a result i made the aweful result of getting the wrong PCU and another £42 went down the drain; £8 for delivery, £30 to get the technician round n £4 which i'll have to pay to send it back :(

Is there any AMD Duo core processors using the Socket 939? and is there anything i can do to confirm that it's the right socket without having to open my computer up

Cheers
