Hi,
I am building my first PC and have a question about the 4 pin and 8 pin CPU conector socket on my MSI Z390 Pro Carbon AC board. The modular 4+4 pin CPU power cord supplied with my Seasonic Prime Ultra 650w Gold, doesn't have the same configutation of square/round pins as either the 4 pin or 8 pin CPU socket on the board. The plug has less square pins than the socket.
I read somewhere that as long as the plug fits the socket, ie a round pin in a square hole, this is ok.
Can anyone please confirm if this is the case please?

Thank you

No, the connector is clearly marked CPU and is split 4+4 . The more I have read does imply it doesn't deem to matter whether some of the pins are square or round, as long as they fit, and a round pin will fit in a square socket.
I just want to be 100% certain.

Ok, let's look at this another way. A standard MSI Z390 board. A standard Seasonic PSU. Cable is marked CPU. Surely these things are standard! The left hand plug is identical to left hand side of socket with 2 square and 2 round, and can only fit left side of socket. Right hand plug is all round pins, whereas right half of socket is 2 square 2 round, so should fit?

mmmm i have never come across plugs like you describe
So i would WAIT until you get someone with more knowledge than me before you try m8

this is what you should have on that board. If that is correct then maybe the plug on the psu is wrong.....never heard of that before though

Yes, that's right.
I have just had this reply from Seasonic:
"No worry about the shape, it's a standard connector on components side for CPU cable. So despite the different shapes, connector will plug and power your motherboard properly without any issue. Just give a try and it will work.
Any other question you may have, please let me know."
So all ok.
Don't really understand why the right hand side of plug is different though, maybe a Seasonic thing, but as long as it fits and works!

just done some reading on tinternet and it does say the round or octagon shaped pins are universal and can go into a square hole...but square pins are for square holes only.

Yeah generally, I go with the side the socket lug is on and the corresponding clip on the plug. I have not heard of a rounded plug in a square socket and I have a seasonic X-650 gold PSU.
