I'll be building a new gaming system in the next 1-2 months and looking for a good cooler in the £30-40 range for cooling a 3570k at around 4-4.5Ghz(4.5 hopefully)

My case is a Silverstone Fortress FT02.

I'm looking at the Thermalright True Spirit 140 but i'm not sure if it will fit, it seems to be quite tall.

Thanks.

Looks like it will fit, it's only about 5mm taller than the cooler i currently have in this case.

Another question, will i need low profile ram for this cooler?

Well for most motherboards, you should be able to get any memory you want. On my Rampage 3 Extreme, the CPU socket is slightly closer to the memory slots than other motherboards so the front fan wire clip ends up just overhanging the nearest slot. Otherwise, if you're not going to populate all the slots, then you'll be fine getting any modules you want for certain.

I'd get the thermalright over the matterhorn. That review isn't particularly in depth.

I wonder what the actual heatsink height is of True Spirit. My guess is with fan it's 170mm... and will fit by lowering fan 5mm ;)

Need someone with one to post actual measurement. ;)

The cooler fits fine in my puny Lian Li mid tower case so it always surprises me when others with much higher end cases seem to have problems fitting tall coolers in.

Anyway, the height of the cooler with fan attached is as the spec suggests. In fact, I've just measured now and it extends roughly 172mm from the motherboard and that includes the thickness of the CPU below the cooler.

Thank you Helios

Would suspect CPU to be 7-8mm above motherboard.
I assume fan can be shifted up/down some?
Is fan setting above top of heatpipes? And if so how much?

It can be adjusted but it's very limited. The height of the fan coincides with the top of the heat pipes.

I should really just write the article on it lol.

Looking at my case it looks like theres atleast 5mm of clearance left, using a 165mm cooler right now. On the silverstone website though, it says it has 165mm clearance.

It's not uncommon for case manufacturer to be conservative in thir measurements.

My Define R2 spec is 165mm clearance
Phanteks spec 171mm height

And I'm not the only one with a Define R2/R3 using a Phanteks cooler ;)

lay your case on it's side and place something (rrugated cardboard is about 3mm) 6mm thick on cooler and see if side fits. If it does try another another.
