Hey guys,

Returning for some advice on a CPU cooler please.

I've upgraded to a 5700x3D, 32GB DDR4, Asus B550-F and Asus TUF 750W PSU with my old SSD's, HDD, Asus GTX 1070 Dual OC.

Everything seems to be fine except that the CPU cooler from my previous Asus P8P67 and i7 2700k doesn't fit the new CPU backplate.

So I would like to know how I would know if a CPU cooler would fit the 5709x3D?

Thank you

The most obvious way to know is that you check on the manufacturer's website for AM4 compatibility, or you google the cooler name plus AM4 and see if someone mentions using it successfully.

Some coolers you can get a retrofit kit for free (Noctua are good with this, from what I've heard), but not all coolers can be made compatible.

Generally speaking, coolers from the sandy bridge generation are compatible with any motherboard up until Intel 10th gen, but AM4 was released way after the 2nd gen CPUs, so unless you purchased the cooler 5+ years later I doubt you'll have any luck there.

What make and model is your current cooler? As Tetras says, there may be a bracket available for it. Failing that you need not look any further than mickyflinn's suggestions. The Thermaltake coolers are unbeatable for the price and much cheaper than overpriced brands like Noctua. I have a Peerless Assassin SE120 on my 7800x3d and I won't be changing to anything else. The Phantom Spirit has a extra heatpipe and cools slightly better than the Peerless Assassin.
