Hi All,
I've had my PC for over 2 years now only upgrading the GPU once in that time. (9800GTX -> 1x280GTX)
Firstly, the important hardware specs
Case - CoolerMaster Cosmos 1000
CPU - QX9650
CPU Cooler - Zalman 9700
After reading reviews the Zalman was given positive experiences for those using the QX9650 however when checking recently some say it just does not give enough to keep it cool.
So a bit of background, skip if you like
I am aware different tools report different temperatures so i am using HWMonitor 1.08 as it is the tool i used 2 years ago.
For reference, the latest tools of Realtemp(3.40) is 6c lower and HWMonitor (1.16) is 10c lower. Than the numbers reported by HWMonitor 1.08
Since i had the computer the CPU has always seemed to run a little hot.
So using HWMonitor 1.08, 2 years ago the temps of the hottest core was about 52c idle, and 61c load. If stressing the CPU hard it might has hit 68c.
These were at stock settings. I did even manage to get the CPU stable at 4GHz (10x400Mhz) but found it to run a little hot so dropping it to 3.6Ghz (9x400Mhz).
Now more recently i have noticed the CPU getting hot again, so i dropped down to stock settings even lowered the voltage a bit more, and i now idle at 60c, and under load hit about 75c. If i overclock slightly I saw it over 100c once so i have dropped it to stock settings. I never even saw it exceed 80c at 4Ghz 2 years ago. I do not believe it is an airflow issue as with the case side off its drops temp by 1c if at all. The entire case has been cleaned and the CPU reseated with new paste.
The heatsink when touched, is not hot. Even when the CPU was at 90c the copper heatpipes felt normal, neither is the air blowing out the back of the case that warm like it used to do. So i wonder if the heatsink has failed.
So new heatsink, the bit you probably want to read
After a great deal of searching, I have settled on the NH-D14 or the Prolimatech Megahalems.
My main questions are will either of these fit into the case. I have doubts over the NH-D14 as it is not on the compatibility list, although some people with a 790i do use it with the CPU fan blowing air up instead at the back of the case.
If the NH-D14, does not fit then i would like to try the Prolimatech Megahalem if that does fit, which from measuring i think it will, but would like to be sure.
I've seen many recommendations for Megahalem fans, mostly seem to point at scythe fans like flex 1600, gentle typhoon (1450RPM), Scythe Ultra Kaze (although very noisy), and the Noctua NF-P12. So does anyone know if the Noctua NF-P14 (140MM fan with 120MM holes) will fit on the Megahalem and is it a good choice of fan. I believe it has good static pressure as it is a CPU cooler.
Or would you recommend the Aksa Viper instead? - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-059-AK&tool=3
I'm not into high air overclocking so am trying to reduce the noise from the machine, but would like to get the CPU back to 3.6/3.8 on decent temperatures again.
Also does the Prolimatech Megahalem RevB as sold here, come with the addition fan clips for the 2nd fan, or does it still need to be brought separately.
Parts of this PC came from OCUK, they stock all the listed parts, and its within 30min driving distance which is why I am asking here.
Thanks for reading, So any recommendations?
