Hello

I'm about to buy an i5 cpu and am planning on overlocking it to around 4.5ghz for the time being.

I'm looking to spend up to £30ish on a cooler for it since I'm having to upgrade my whole system. Could someone please recommend me a cooler which will allow me to overlock my i5 to 4.5ghz comfortably.

I've been looking at the Tranquillo, will this be good enough or are there better coolers for this price range?

Any advice/words of wisdom will be hugely appreciated.

Hi there,

Please bear in mind that the next generation Intel CPUs (including new i5 chips) are expected to come out on monday to replace the current ones, so if you can hold off a few days then I would.

As for a cooler, the tranquillo would be the one I would go for - it cools well enough and is relatively quiet. If you want to spend a bit more then I would look for a Thermalright X Silent Edition or a Thermalright Archon.

Sweet. I'll give the Tranquillo a go then. I'll get a more expensive cooler further down the line if I get overly involved with this overclocking malarky.

Would it be advisable to push the CPU above 4.5ghz with the Tranquillo?

Do you mean Ivy bridge? The plan is, to get SB once IB comes out, hoping for a price drop but I doubt it will be much, if any.

Most coolers above the stock cooler will happily cope with 4.5ghz as long as your case has good air flow too. Doesn't matter which CPU cooler you have if you have warm air blowing into the case.

It really depends on the chip you get, if you get a good one that can run on relativly low volts then 4.5GHz on this cooler is certainly possible.

Yes, I was reffering to Ivy Bridge.

I wouldn't hope for much of a price drop on SB when IB arrives (unless you are buying second hand) as retailers tend to keep the last gen CPUs at the original price until they run out of stock. That is certainly what happened to the last two intel generations. Therefore, If at all possible I would pay the bit extra for the IB chip (pending reviews ofcourse) as it should be faster-per-clock, more energy efficient and support native PCIE gen3. On launch day we should see how overclocking and temperatures are with these new 28nm chips.
