CPU cooler help - High profile RAM worries

Hi,

Looking to overclock my i7-3770K so after a good CPU cooler that will work with my current hardware:

- i7-3770K
- Gigabyte UD5H http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4440#ov
- Patriot Venom RAM http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-086-PA
- Corsair Carbide 500R http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-057-CS

The machine is used primarily for motion/video work, so needs a good cooler for long renders and demanding use. As quiet as possible, but low temps is priority. Budget is not an issue at this stage.

The main thing I'm worried about is the high profile Patriot Venom RAM getting in the way.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not saying the H100 is gonna diiiee!! or anything, but for work critical stuff on a system that's probably being run 24/7, I'd always go with a solid aircooler for the fact that it simply can't let you down. But that's me.

Just give it a dust every now and then and that's that :)
 
I just removed the heatsinks on the ram and am running bare sticks at 1800 to 2000MHz no problem. 4 x 4GB sticks.

Hairdryer to soften glue and just peel off.

Doomespeed, I checked that deal earlier and it looked great! I've just always worried about liquid cooling and have read plenty of reviews saying it's just not that much better than air at the end of the day. I would happily go for liquid if space limitations required it however. The term refurbished has also always scared me a bit! Would you say these would be a safe bet?

Uncle Petey, those all look pretty good! Would any of those definitely have enough clearance for the high profile RAM in my setup?

nkata, I'd never considered doing that! Great suggestion. That would solve my dilemma, as I could just get a decent quality air cooler and not have to worry about RAM clearance. Was that relatively easy to do without damaging the RAM? Do you have the same RAM as me?

What Unclue Petey (from the wet side) :D said or remove heat spreaders from RAM as nkata said and use most any cooler made. True Spirit 140 is very good cooler and very cheap... even cheaper on special right now. £26.39 is so cheap I'm tempted to get on just to have on hand... and I already have Macho HE-02, Ultra 120A, Cogage Arrow, PH-TC14PE and Zaward Vapor 120 waiting to be used. :rolleyes:

I would not use an H100... definitely not a refurbished on with only 90 day warranty. Good air cools as well or better, is quieter, normally cheaper and is more dependable... only thing that ever seems to go wrong on air coolers is occasionally a fan needs replaced. CLC's (mostly Corsiair) almost always have a current thread about pump issues/failure... Just not as dependable. Where do you think they get CLC's to fix and sell as "refurbished"? Have never seen a "Refurbished" air cooler. :D

They won't trouble your ram at all and they'll do a great job :)

If you do decide to remove the heatsinks, then I'd go for one of these:

Thanks all, this is the best help I've found online on this issue so far!

I'm a bit worried about removing the heatsinks on the RAM, I don't want to damage it. So at the moment I'm thinking about getting one of the coolers recommended as compatible with my RAM. I wish I'd foreseen this problem and got low profile RAM!

I checked the specs on Patriot's website and the RAM is only 4.1CM high. Is that a 'medium' heatsink as apposed to a 'high' one? And does this open up my range for potential coolers?

Yes it's true that early editions of the Corsair Hydro series had problems. I myself had a faulty one. Corsair replaced it, paying for and organising all the international shipping. All sorted in 5 working days and the replacement hasn't skipped a beat.

People will say "well just google *insert product* problems" and yes you will get results, but when products work fine, nobody makes threads about that.
 
Yeah very true Resident. That's why trusting things online is hard and making decisions on purchases for things that have hundreds of available products and options is very difficult!

You have a point but i have seen many rigs with H100's running happily and theres been a fair bit of positive feedback on the Hydro-refurb thread..

I agree with you, i'd rather have an air cooler but the H100 at that price is very very good and certainly worth mentioning...

Refurbished is basically replacing the faulty pumps with working ones..

@OP, the K2 would be my choice. :)
 
If it wasn't for the very high usage and what I assume to be work critical nature of the OP's needs, I'd say yeah, take a punt on the refurbed H100.

In this case, I think the guaranteed reliability of a decent aircooler is the way to go and a True 140 for £26 is pretty much a no-brainer :) Plus, it'll be quieter.

Does not have TY-143 fans. It has TY-145 fans (same blade design as TY-141).

Both are same cooler and fans are the same except or color.
BW has different fan clips too.

CLC's for custom loop wannabees. :D

FYI:
As far as I know Asetek, Swiftech and CoolIT are the only manufacturers of CLC systems. All others are rebranded Asetek or CoolIT product.
Asetek has patents on the "concept" of CLC systems (closed loop with pump built in).
Asetek is claiming because of these patents it has control of the manufacture and sales of all closed loop cooler systems with a built-in pump.
Asetek has filed patent infringement suits in America against CoolIT and swiftech to stop them selling CLCs. This is the reason Swiftech pulled their H220 off of American market.

Patriot site seems to be down, but I think I remember seeing they are 4.1cm high (a quick Google seems to confirm this). Might pop one out and measure it in a minute.

Vengeance RAM seems to be 5.25cm high, according to this page http://www.corsair.com/support/faq/memory/

Does knowing that the Patriot Venoms are 4.1cm open up my options a bit more?

I would obviously love to own a cooler named after Mount Doom, so, yeah that would be great.
 
I just checked too (Note to self: Google is your friend) and I can't get onto the Patriot site either.
Still, if 4.1cm is correct, then they're a fair bit shorter than vengeance. I seriously doubt they'd be taller as vengeance is pretty ridiculous as it is :D

If all that is accurate, then a K2 will easily accommodate them.
Fwiw, I had a K2 for a while and I'd highly recommend it :)
 
Just got my Viper out* and it comes in at 4.2cm, maybe 4.3cm to be totally safe, but no more.

So if the absolute max is 4.3cm (to be honest it's probably 4.2cm), does this give me more options? Would you say go for a Mount Doom?

Here's a K2 with vengeance ram underneath it:
Your ram should be no problem as I'm sure you've guessed :)

Having had a K2, I'd say go for it, though you should be fine with any of the others and would maybe have to raise the fan a little on the ones that use 140mm fans at the front.

Pick the pretty one is what I usually say at a time like this :)

Think Carbide 500R is 180mm CPU clearance so if you have 140mm front fan on cooler it should just fit.
180mm + 8mm CPU to mobo = 188mm mobo to side cover. 43mm RAM + 2-3mm mounting + 140mm fan = 186mm.
Should be good to go even if you change the 120mm stock K2 fan to a 140mm.
