CPU Cooler problems

Hi,

I've just built a computer made of entirely 2nd hand parts. Cooling the CPU I'm using a Vapochill Micro Extreme Performance cooler. When I fired the computer up I'm pretty sure I heard a 'pop' about 1 second in, and I've now noticed that the fan on the cpu cooler isn't spinning. When checking the temperature in the bios the cpu is already at 50 Celsius after about 3 minutes on (started at about 40).

Firstly just wanted to check that the 'pop' will be the fan engine going - that when fan engines go they do make a 'pop' sound! Also is it normal for the CPU to jump up in temperature so rapidly like this? I woulda thought even without the fan working the phase change cooling of the vapochill would still keep it reasonably cool for a while ... guess I'm just trying to rule out that 'pop' sound being anything else other than the fan ...

Thanks in advance for any help or tips.

Probably the fan if something went pop and it stopped ;)

That cooler is not that good (plenty for an athlon 64) so that would probably account for the quick rise in temps. If you have a 120mm case fan put that on there for now until you can get a replacement.

Cheers, I assume it can be replaced with any 92mm fan as an alternative? There are always fans going on the for sale forums, so i'll just pick one up from there if that's the case.

Is the fan connected to a motherboard header? If so you might want to check that header with another fan, just to make sure the pop wasn't the traces on the mobo burning out and not the fan dying. Check the fan on another header too :)

The fan is connected to a fan controller which is in turn attached to the mobo ... will check the fan out on another header though as suggested :)

Confirmed the fan was the problem. Decided to replace the whole cooler with a thermaltake big typhoon in the end - was gonna use it on my comp but nuts to it :P
