Hi

I need a new CPU cooler, and was wondering how do I know if my ram will fit? My rams are 38mm high.

This cooler for example is 159mm high, seeing the fans are the highest point, is it as simple as doing 159-140=19mm?

You can usually move the fan that we'll be blocking the RAM up to allow more clearance, I've done this on my silver arrow extreme and it's a matter of mm between the two fans height different so not noticeable..

Obviously if it's the actual cooler that's the lowest point you'd be in a bit of bother.

Also my ram slots 1 and 2 are from the right hand side so the first slot nearest he cooler is empty, not that it should make or break fitment.

Yea, thats true, but my problem is I will have all 4 slots filled.

I remember having seen mobos where there were ram slots on both sides of the CPU, but now I can't find it anywhere..

You're thinking of X79/socket 2011.

List your system spec and a few of the coolers you're looking at and we'll help you find out if they'll fit, or provide a budget.

Well, it's a build I have in my mind, really. I'm buying bits and pieces everywhere.

I already got 2x 5870, getting a Corsair 750 PSU, i5-2500K, and a MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard, plus, my 4x4GB Ram sticks, which are 38mm according to the product page.

The cooler is undecided, but I'd assume to gain the max of Crosfire, it would need a overclock, so a decent cooler is needed. I would really prefer it with 2 fans, but it might not be possible. Other than that, it should be either blue, black or white, or a mix of any of them.

What case and budget?
The case is still somewhat an open question.. I know it's essential, cause of the max height, but I still haven't found any I like.. The budget, probably ~ 60 pound.

The case is gonna be a midi-tower, so I don't know if there is a sandard height or something for that.

Edit: I can see for 60 pound I can get the Alpenföhn water cooler, maybe that's the best bet while having space for 4 ram sticks?

Edit2: After further looking, I think I'm picking the Corsair Venegance C70 case.

You are right. ram + fan = case clearance. With 38mm ram most cases will limit you to 120mm fan over ram. 140mm fan + 38mm ram = 178mm,and not many cases with that much clearance. Other options are cooler that set far enough behind ram to allow fan to fit.

Thermalright HR-02 Macho £39.98 will fit a fan between ram and cooler. Very quiet and very close to top group. No 2011 mount.

Alpenfohn K2 £59.99 has 120mm on front and 140mm in middle One of the best. No 2011 mount.

Silverstone Heligon SST-HE01 £62.99 New but reviews put it in the top group.

Thanks a lot man! I think I'll read up on the Silverstone, but as for the looks, the Alpenfohn is what I prefer :D

There are many more.

Yea, I'm not too keen on the Noctuna due to it's colour :)

So you're saying these would all fit, but I assume they will only fit, if I locate the fan inbetween the heatsink or behind it(as exhaust)?

Many of the single tower cooler will fit with fan between ram and cooler. Depends on how much room there is there. I can't say for sure as I don't have measurements of your motherboard. Case clearance is also important.
