CPU cooling

Hey guys, just found out that my Intel stock cooler for my E6600 was put in the wrong way around, i.e the wire has to go around the fan.
I had no problem with this in my old build as I taped it to another cable after I saw this, but now that i'm changing case i'd like to remedy this.
I know that I will need to reapply thermal paste to the CPU but I was just thinking if there was a CPU cooler out there that has the same size as the stock cooler but works better, been looking around but all I see are these HUGE coolers that I dont really want.
Any suggestions?
 
Is there any particular reason why you don't want a larger cooler? Generally they perform better than smaller coolers in terms of noise and cooling capability, assuming you've the room in the case to accommodate it.
 
Well, since I have the Lian Li V1000PLUSII case, I have that CPU fan duct attached, if that was removed I honestly don't know if that would compromise overall cooling of the case.
If a larger CPU cooler can fit and won't heat up the rest of the case/disturb the airflow in the case then I can probably fit a bigger cooler in.

the trends in air cooling have led to most of the new heatsinks being massive. I have spent the last week or so reading up on whats good at the moment.

If you don't want a big mamma your best choice is 'probably' the old XP-90c using the LGA775 Adapter (sold separately).

That would have to use either a quiet 92mm fan or you have the option to mount a 120mm using the Zalman fan bracket.
 
I was looking at the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro the other day, I'm just wondering if it will fit my case if I took out the CPU duct.
Anyone using this and can give me a general idea of big it is?
