Mother Board: Gygabyte GA-P55-UD6
Proccessor: Intel i5-75 - Socket LGA 1156 - 2.66 GHz - 8MB Cache - PCG 09B - 4Core
RAM 4GB (3.25 usable)
Cooler Master Case
Windows XP & Windows 7 Dual boot.

At present I am using the stock CPU fan.

Running at the default 2.66 for the moment to try and keep temp’s down.
Temp’s whilst sitting idle is in the region of 51 – 53 degrees (each core) which in my opinion is a wee bit on the hot side so I am looking for a decent fan for this. It must be quiet\silent whilst in operation.

AS I do video editing amongst other intensive uses, the temp’s can shoot up quite a bit so looking for a couple of recommendations for CPU fans.

I was thinking of something like the following, but will be guided by the experts :)
Akasa AK-CC4005SP01 Venom Nano CPU Cooler
(Socket LGA775/LGA1156/LGA1366/AM2/AM3)
Or
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus (Socket AM2/AM2+/AM3/775/1156/1366)

Finally what would you say is a safe running temperature for my processor?

Depends what your budget is really, and how much room you have in your pc case. You'll find a new cooler will drop your idle temps by about 10c at least, depending on your case cooling / room temp.

For load temps, most people try to limit them to 75c or thereabouts.

I have the Zalman CNPS10X-Performa here, which keeps my i5 [email protected] at around 66c under the Prime95 stress test. It also kept my i7 [email protected] at around 73-74c under Prime with HT enabled. The fan noise is noticeable at these temps though, as it's set to run at 80% when the temps hit 80c in my bios. At 40%, which is the speed I have it set to when idle, its pretty much inaudible.

It also comes with a rheostat that will lower the voltage of the fan for quieter operation, but you might be able to set the fan speed depending on cpu temp in your bios  I use an Asus board here, so no idea if your Gigabyte board allows that.

The Titan Fenrir, Akasa Nero S and Noctua NH-D14 are also well worth considering ( if you have the cash and space in your case for the D14 ).

And if you're not put off by the thought of liquid near your cpu, even though it is contained in piping, look into the Corsair H50 or H70.

I am using a Noctua NH-U12P SE2 with my i5 750 @ 4.1GHz on a Gigabyte P55 UD5; the fans of the SE2 I don't hear at all, temps are under 70c running Prime95...

Do you intend to o/c, what is your budget and PC case?

Thanks for the replies.

I plan on using the Gygabyte built in overclocking which will raise CPU from 2.66Ghz to a maximum of 4Ghz (in 4 steps) so am looking for a cooler that will cope with that. My proposed normal running will be at 3Ghz.

Have never thought of using liquid cooling and the thought sends shivers down my spine.

Budget is about the £30.00 mark.

The case I have is the Cooler Master but cannot remember the actual model without digging out the receipts. But it is clad intenally for silent running and I am assuming this brings the temps up a bit.

I will have a look at the suggested coolers and get back and let you know my decision

What is your opinion(s) of the Zalman CNPS10X Extreme? I know it is way above my proposed budget but if it is any good it might be worth stretching to get it. OC is out of stock but get it for £45.00.

All I would have to do is starve the cat for a while to meet the extra cost

Finally is it easy to fit? Would I have to remove the motherboard to ensure good fit?

For all the larger coolers you will need to remove the motherboard, as the cooler will screw through the holes around the cpu socket into a backplate.

Google for reviews on the Extreme. It'll should be fine but I don't think its £20 better than the Performa.

To be honest there isn't a great deal of difference between coolers like the Performa, Extreme, Titan Fenrir, Thermolab Baram, Noctua N12, Akasa, etc.. especially if your cpu is going to be running at 3ghz.

The most important thing is what one will fit in your case, and whether the height of it interferes with your cases' side panel / gpu fan.

I would edit out of your post the reference to the OcUK competitor, see Here

Nothing terribly wrong with the Zalman CNPS10X Extreme, but I think if you are prepared to go over your budget you can do better for the money, ie the Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B or Thermalright Venomous X and a decent 120mm fan or titan ttc-nk85tz/v2 fenrir

or if you want to stay within your budget, the zalman cnps10x-performa...

you might find This helpful...
