I've just bought an athlon xp3200+ for an upgrade. Its second hand and has a very slight chip of one corner of die. Would I be right in saying that a fault like this will definitely stop it working?

Cheers in advance.

Maybe. Only way is to try. I say this with experience. I had a Duron that had a chp in the corner of the die and a hairline fracture. Great chip. Never once let me down.

Had a few of them myself with slight chips and they all worked fine even when overclocked quite a bit.

Give it a try and see if its ok...be careful with that cooler though :)

Did you pay by paypal? If it doesn't work you could put a claim in with them presuming it was sold as working and not "untested"?

i gave my mate a socket 939 AMD athlon 3200+ because i bent all the pins on the bottom of the cpu whilst taking it out of my old pc.

Hes got that running now, at 2.4ghz on some crappy akasa cooler :p

Once saw a PC come into the repair shop I worked for not booting, took a look at the CPU (athlon I think), turned out it'd split into two separate pieces! Safe to say we didn't get that one running again.

Panic over. It would seem that a small chip, probably about 1/2 a mm, doesn't stop it from working.

Loving the upgrade, and the seller is well and truly off the hook. :-)
