Hi guys,

I am having a bit of a dilema. A friend of mine (who i trust) has a Phenom X 6 he is offering to me. He pulled it from his uncles PC, the motherboard was shot due to water damage.

He pulled the other parts; GPU, RAM, HDD, PSU ect and tested them on other system and they worked. He has no other way of testing the CPU. He is not sure whether it will work, thats why he's offering it cheap and mushy pea's.

Do you guys think that it will still work or would the motherboard of damaged it when it blew?
Worth the risk?

Thanks in advance.

Depends what CPU and how much. Generally, CPUs are extremely resilient, so it's probably fine unless it was actually hit with water.

He can't be sure what happened. His uncle just threw it at him and told him he spilled water on it.

I just wondered whether the damage could be done through the socket? no electrical surge or anything?

@madtoday: I don't live near him anymore and he does have other buyer interested, i feel bad messing him around.

It's up to you at the end of the day but as alex24 said CPU's are quite resilient if they aren't directly touched by water. The other items seem to be fine so I probably take the risk.

normally there is a cooler bolted on top of the cpu.

so it prob shielded a lot of the water away

not that i'm saying it will garantee to work

@ishoeyi.

That is true. He did say he took the CPU cooler off an that works on his system.
He does says he is over 90% sure that it works.

Can see if i can knock him down a little.

Thats for the advice guys.

Why not say, I'll give you £25 now whatever, then if I test it thoroughly and it works, I'll send another £15-25 or something?

Thats a great idea.

I don't want to sound like im trying to rip him off but i am going to give this a try.

I have already sent him an email asking for pictures. I just like to see before i commit.

Thanks guys.

to be honest, even if at a knock down price, I would say yes to whatever price makes you happy but obviously if you plug it in and it's dud I would want my money back

if he tried to sell it on ebay as spares or repair he'd get 10% of it's value, or if he listed it as working the buyer would just do a claim and get their money back

What do we do with a motherboard after assembly? Put it in a dishwasher. Wash it with water. Water is not harmful to electronics. Water may cause currents to flow where signals get confused. So we just make sure everything is dry before powering - so that it work right the first time.

If only water was the only problem, then once that trapped water (an electrical conductor) is removed, then everything should work just fine.
