Hey guys. I've always known about cpu De lidding but never had the confidence to do it myself.

I was wondering does anyone know if I was to buy a cpu from ocuk I could pay a fee for one of the technicians to delid the cpu and replace the stock paste with liquid metal

they might delid but there is no way they would thermal it aswell as something would go wrong during transit....
then again they probably wont do it in the first place as if they break the cpu or something goes wrong, then they have to pay for the cpu.

if you paid in advance + to delid and anything goes wrong then you will have to take a hit if they mess it up and loose you money.

only haswells and ivys need delidding really and there isn't really much point in buying them now.

Looking at the OPs sig.... there is nothing that can be delidded that would be faster than what he already has is there? His chip is soldered as are all the X99 chips, a 3970X is already faster than a 4790K for most tasks.

Or is it a second system you're thinking of?

I just did it to an i5 4670k. I used mx-5 as its what I could get hold of at the time but thinking of re-doing it with liquid pro.

Trying to find out whether its better to leave the lid loose and held down by the cpu clamp or to stick it down with whatever.

leave it loose and liquid pro is best imo

if you did stick it down remember to leave an air gap in the adhesive or else the lid will pop off due to heat/expansion(it could also crack the die)

it will be better than any paste on the market

remember not to get any on the line of transistors next to the die as its conductive

I've already done the nail varnish trick.

I think the mx-5 has settled down a bit as its idling at 20c. Not done any really stressful stuff

A little tip for the liquid metal. Apply it to the cotton bud so it kind of soaks in then give the chip a good rubbing... Eventually it'll all be nice and shiny :D

Trying to spread the little ball of LM can be infuriating!

Depends that you want to de-lid.

Not all CPUs can be done safely. Haswells and Ivy (37xx and below) since they use cement paste.

Ivy-E and Haswell-E are soldered, and not only is pointless to try it but dangerous process.

The 3970X you have is soldered.

Ocuk used to sell bundles with delidded 4770k's, don't know if they're gonna offer ones with dc chips though.
