Hello everyone,

My fiancees computer has recently been crashing when playing Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 and Sims 2. It is turning itself off completely and I am wondering if this is related to the motherboard hardware monitor.

Asus PC Probe is reporting the CPU temperature at 73c and Core Temp is reporting the temperature of core 0 and core 1 at -32c or 91c!

I recently put new thermal paste on the heatsink as I figured it may need replacing.

However, I really don't know which reading to trust and what the operating temperatures should be.

Current system spec is; Asus P5K Motherboard, and a E6750 Core 2 Duo CPU.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Try reinstalling the HSF again with minimal compound and try a BIOS reset at the same time - just in case that has got it's self in a tissy.
Can you test the cpu in another machine.

Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Run a game or load prime95 and try touching near the base of the heatsink where it meets the cpu, you should be able to tell if temps crazily high that way.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your replies everyone.

Sorry I have taken so long to reply, the Computer is really misbehaving - it will not even boot into windows now!

It's based around 2gb of PC 6400 Twinx DDR2 Corsair, a heatpiped 7950GTX, E6750 P4, P5k motherboard and a 520W Corsair Modular PSU.

We are not sure if it is the CPU or motherboard, but I think it is one of those.

When reading the Hardware Monitor from the BIOS, the temperature rises from 41c to 73c very quickly although it does have two Cores in it. AT 73c it stops rising.

Interestingly, the POST screen, indicates the memory is only in single-channel mode.

When it did power down, the heatsink didn't appear to be warm at all - the video card was warmer.

All I have done is remove the heatsink twice and changed the thermal compound twice. The first time round, the problem was intermitent and only happened during games. The second time around it will not go into Windows now, instead choosing to switch off before Windows loads.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hey everyone,

Quick update - I'm positive it's the video card... it's the hottest item in the whole computer.

I have reseated the heatsink and fan and had more thermal compound put on the item - the CPU still reaches 73c in the Hardware Monitor, but I think this is a normal operating temperature for a core2 design - the heatsink itself is barely warm.

However, when the computer switched itself off yesterday, I was able to surf the web and do other things. Upon touching the video card afterwards, it was too hot - I could only leave my hand on it for a few seconds.

I don't know how hot the gpu core is because nvidia stupidly got rid of the temperature monitor on the driver, but I think it's the cause of the computer powering down. I can't say I have ever trusted fanless video cards either.

So hopefully cleaning it will help, otherwise getting a new one.

The hard drive is doing the clicks of death as well...only when I go on 'Add Remove programs' though. But that's a different matter!

Anyone have anything else to add to this, in case I might be missing a trick?

Thanks again

Hello everyone,

Yet another update!

I've just been advised by a work colleague that 73c is too hot for a Core2Duo. This is confirmed on the Intel whitepapers etc.

I have also been told that most Retail coolers are utter crap...so I think I'm going to upgrade the cooling...any recommendations?

Thank you

Tunia Tower, Thermalright Ultra Extreme, Sun beam core contact are all good coolers but require the board to be removed.

Arctic Cooler freezer 7 pro is good budget and can be installed without the board being removed.

Thank you RJC!

Silly question...the CPU fan header is 4 pin on the P5k.

Should I experience any major problems using a 3 pin CPU fan, on that 4 pin header?

Thank you!

Hey everyone,

Thank you for your continued help!

I have now ordered Arctic Cooler freezer 7 pro; Akasa thermal compound and a replacement 500gb Sata II WD Hard Drive with 32mb cache.

So hopefully that will sort everything out!

Thanks again for your help.

Wow!! What a difference! On the button, the BIOS reported the CPU as 15c! It's sitting between 22-25c in Windows and only went up to 31-32c with Ut2004 maxed out - 16x as, 8xs aa!

That's a difference of 53c from the button!!

What a brilliant heatsink and fan, definitely going to give it a glowing review!!

Thanks again all!

I am tempted to overclock it...I think it will be good for 3ghz with this cooling!!

I now need to drop the motherboard temperature - it went to 45c which made the alarm go off on Asus Probe III!

I have installed a 80mm but I haven't activated it - would this sufficiently drop the environment temperature or should I consider a different case - currently being used is a Coolermaster Mystique - which I think is appalling for air flow - though I do not know if the fanless 7950GTX is helping the environment temperature much.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have a coolermaster mystique - good looking cases, but carp at M/B cooling, the hard drive cage restricts ingressing air flow, despite the 120mm intake fan...

That said, your Graphics card won't be helping either - you could get a new case, my M/B temp is taken from the southbridge (gigabyte EP45 UD3R) and hovers around the 45 to 50 degree mark, I beleive that is probably acceptable.
