CPU Equivalent

Hello,
Can anyone specify what the equivalent AMD AM2 processor is to the Intel Core 2 Duo E6400? It needs to be compatible to the Asus Crosshair Motherboard.

Can I just ask: If i purchase this processor:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.40GHz (Socket AM2)

Will it run at only 2.40? or double with the dual core to 4.80?

Is that the same with the Intel Core 2? If so then is the speed written on the box the doubled up speed? - Then why are there not any higher speed dual cores?

But to me, that sounds like each core will be running at 2.40 giving a total of 4.8?

So, Is having a dual core 2.40Ghz processor better than having a single core 3.40Ghz? Will it run faster and more efficiently.
