Hello - My brother wants to upgrade his ageing +4400x2 AMD rig.
Budget £500 max for CPU, Ram + HSF & mobo.
I was thinking of a i5 750, Corsair ram but unsure which motherboard.
Have read that some will slow graphics PCIE x16 to get max through put on USB3 &/or 6GB/s hdd. Would like to avoid that issue.

Have used ASUS or Gigabyte in past.
He is not a gamer, apart from Civilization, but runs BOINC.
Not looking for max o/c as the room is rarely below 22C so would like to run not too hot.Current rig is almost 5 years old so would want replacement to get close to that.
All to fit, be kept cool, in Akasa Xone case.

Any & all suggestions welcome. Thanks

Board doesn't support USB 3.0 or SATA 6Gb/s but if you want any of this features, you can get an expansion cards for both. It will also ensure that your board doesn't throttle. Although you wouldn't see any throttling until your board uses several SATA 6Gb/s devices combined with SLI/Crossfire graphics cards afaik.

I don't know about BOINC but if it makes a use of hex cores CPUs, you mind find Phenom II X6 1055T a better choice (especially if he's no gamer).

Thanks for that, Mr Krugga, esp. about throttling.
Won't the 750 have hyperthreading to give 8 virtual cores?
I very much doubt he will use Sli or xfire

No, Core i5 750 doesn't support HyperThreading. You'd have to throw in another £60-90 to get i7 860 for this board, which is a bit pointless. I'd rather go Core i7 920 route otherwise, although they're not listed in here atm.

I'll have a read through new controllers throttling the bandwidth now, will keep you posted.

i7 920 - £179.97
OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 - £128.98
ASUS P6T SE iX58 - £145.16
Zalman CNPS10X-Performa CPU Cooler - £26.99
Total - £487.09 (inc VAT and delivery)

It might be overkill but it would fit in the budget - and be more futureproof. You should be able to pair an i7 920 (<£200) with a GA-X58A-UD3R (~£150) to give you USB 3.0, SATA 6Gbps and four PCI-e x16 slots for potential GPU additions. Add in <£120 for RAM and <£50 for decent HSF and you can get that below £500 without making any compromises. :)

Can you add one to a basket? :D

Thanks for the replies.
Biffa - after a lot of searching I can get to £180-95 + free delivery for an i7 920:confused: Obviously your knowledge & search skills are better than mine:(

What with the DDR3 & 6gb to boot it seems that the i7 route is the better choice.
OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 (1600MHz) is £132.99 here; seems worth the extra tenner.
