Hiya there everyone.

I have just been given computer and wish to make it work just for internet and email etc..

the specs are:

MESH
AMD K7 Processor
AMD Athalon(TM) XP1800+
1.54GHz
512mb of RAM
CD-RW
DVD-Rom
Zip Drive
(I do not know how to find out what socket this cpu is, I am kinda at a loss for what to try next if you cannot tell)

I ran an application to see if I could find out more information regarding the mobo but it didn't identify it and there is no writing on the mobo it's self.

The problem is that I have the computer working with XP Professional and all is well, then about 2 minutes into switching it on the CPU fan makes an awful racket, if I touch the CPU in the middle and stop it spinning it stops making a noise slows down then speeds up a few minutes later it all happens again.

Is there a way I can replace just the fan, or do I have to replace both the fan and the heatsink, and if so is this easy to do?

I apprieciate that you expect people who have problems to do as much research before coming to you, I hope you can see I have done all I can without some more advice.

Thanks for your time

Cheers for your reply, I have posted some pics of the heatsink and fan here http://www.7yearslate.com/amd I wonder if you could tell me what or which fan or cpu I could purchase on the overclockers website please?

I dont mind buying a new heatsink & fan at all I just don't want to spend heaps.

Again I really appriciate your help

Yes you can change the fan and heatsink individually however if its not overclocked and not put under great amount of load any socket A heatsink should be suffice.

Are you sure its not just preset in the bios or somewhere for your fan too speed up when your computer breaks a certain temperature? do you know what your case and cpu temperatures are?

also your motherboard looks like an ASUS A7A266 (should say by the end of the first pci slot under the agp slot if it is) :)

To Tell the truth it was given to me cause the fan started making rediculously horrible noises. I know enough about computers to know that if it's whaling and crying" it needs help lol.

Anyway yeah I am pretty sure it's dead or dying, the guy bought a new computer took the hard drive out and said here ya go, a project for you.

I have been looking around now that you have told me what I can replace it with and I found out that I probably had this cooler
This is not available from overclockers so I am going to go for this
instead.

Thanks for your help, I have no doubt I will be back for more :)

Cheers, Switch
