Retail i5 3750k.

Putting core to the mobo looks easy enough, but the cooler has 3 sections of grey paste on it - is there any special orientation the cooler has to go or will the paste just spread out evenly when it comes in to contact with the back of the core?

Any ideas welcome.

I thought this might be the case.

But you know how it is when you're building a new system when your last one is nearly a decade old - everything is new and scary and might burst into flames at any moment :p
