Cpu fan locked at 100%

Hi, I built my new PC and got it running the other day but I have a problem...

My CPU cooler's fan is always 100% and so it is loud, I am using the default one that comes with the heat sink, I have tried using AMD overdrive to control the fan speeds, but this doesn't change anything. I have also updated the bios, and enabled cool'n quiet too, and it is still loud. How can I sort this out?

Although my cpu is reaching temps of 20. which is quite good, I would like to sacrifice this temp :)

I also found the stock AMD fan terribly loud aswell. There should be options to change the fan speed in the BIOS though under the section that shows the CPU temp if its anything like my previous motherboards. It's usually something you need to enable for the speed and target temp settings to appear.

It would probably still be in your interests to upgrade the CPU cooler though to something better/quieter.

Ok, well its an asus crosshair iii motherboard, I will have a look later, but im not sure, i'll post back later

I was also planning to buy another CPU cooler, but not at the moment.

If I can't find anything, could I get a small switch that controls the fan speed?
That could do, if it was cheap, it could let me hold out before buying another cpu cooler

A pal of mine has a similar problem to yours only he has a stock Intel cooler, he uses a program called 'SpeedFan' to slow the fan down a bit, it works for him so maybe it will work for you.

i'll have a look at that speedfan...

oh BTW I updated the AMD overdrive and now I can't control any fans, as they are all blurred out, before, I could control the fans but they would never change

Nope, tried speed-fan, and it doesn't work.
I'll look into my bios later

I guess I can only control my processor fan (the one that I need to change)
As all my other fans go into my psu

Thanks all, I got it fixed, I changed some settings in the BIOS, I still can't control the speed through overdrive or speed-fan, but that doesn't matter

I don't really remember but I think I found it in the instructions for the board, There was 4 setting, like a low, medium and high. Or off completely which would make the fan go at max

I couldn't control the fans with the Crosshair III with any software anyway :p. But setting the CPU fan to PWM mode then "Silent" in BIOS kept it quiet during idle. Although I changed the cooler anyway since the stock fan was too loud when gaming.
