Firstly, the CPU in question is the E6600, with the stock heatsink.

Okay so this problem has only started happening over the past couple of days,
the system was built last friday.
Anyway if the PC has been off for a while the CPU fan doesnt come on straight away when its turned on, sometimes not coming on until Windows has fully opened, meaning I'm left with the CPU Fail Alarm until then.
Sometimes if I have to shut down my computer and then restart it within a few minutes the fan takes around 5 seconds to come on meaning I'm given a short blast of the alarm.

Is there any way to fix this or am I going to need to buy a new fan/heatsink?
If anyone else has had something similar happen to them I would be pleased to know how you solved it.
Also how long can the CPU stand without having the fan on? Its running at stock levels at the moment.

I,d buy a new HSF go for the Artic Cooling Freezer 7 ,its a good upgrade to the stock fan .and a good price . ;)

The fan not coming on in itself shouldn't be a problem with a properly configured Conroe motherboard.
The fan won't turn until the bios considers that the CPU is warm enough to merit it.

The alarm suggests that the fan speed sensor is faulty though.

Check your bios fan speed control setting against the instructions in the motherboard manual before changing the fan. And make sure that the CPU fan is plugged into the correct power header for the CPU on the motherboard.

Never seen a motherboard that doesnt start up the cpu fan the second the system is powered up. Many fans need a 'kick start' to get going, but can then be slowed down with voltage management.

Pretty much all my PC's start up with the fan at full speed, and then drop to 'quiet mode' with the fan at around 50% speed unless the cpu gets too hot.

Built a mate a system before xmas and he was moaning the other week as it was making an annoying noise when it booted up (his flat was about 10'c though:eek: ) - that was the fan fail alarm on a gigabyte iirc, i either disabled it in the bios or set the fan to be 100% anyway now he's happy and the pc's quiet.

You've not seen that many newer ones then.

Okay so I seem to have fixed it by changing the smart fan setting from auto to intel.
system is also running about 10 degrees cooler now. :D
