CPU fan size question

I have just built myself a cheap PC using a AMD AM1 5350 processor - The PC works fine but I have a bit of fan noise or HDD noise - HDD is one I have had for a while and is SATA - I can't distinguish which one is creating the noise so I am looking at cheap option first.

I have measured the fan and case size is 50mm and fixing holes are 40mm apart.- Looking through the fans on OCuk here I see there are 40 and 50mm fan's but which one do I need - no other dimensions are give so do I assume the fan itself is 40 or 50mm

This is a 40mm fan so if it is blades then this would fit hopefully as screw holes line up with tips of blades.

Fan sizes are total dimensions, so a 40mm is 40mm x 40mm side to side (of the entire fan casing)

The big problem with fans is the smaller the fan, the faster it has to spin and will create a higher pitch sound, so swapping a 40 or 50mm for the same size will still be quite noisy

Could you change the whole Heatsink and fan to something larger? This will be the best way to quieten a noisy CPU fan
