Cpu fan speed increased after installing gpu?

I have run my system without a gpu for the last week and it's an i7 4790k not currently overclocked and just sat on a h81 board. (Waiting for a kaby board and new cpu).

The cpu cooler is only an arctic something or other and it has a voltage reducer to make the fan silent. It's been running great and silent for a week with fine temps.

Tonight I popped in a new 1080 gpu and the fan noise of the cpu at idle has
really ramped up. It's not the gpu that's in 0dba mode and I checked the fans on the gpu are not spinning.

The cpu is at 40c. Perhaps warm for idle but its only since the gpu went in the noise has started!

Any thoughts?

Maybe the gpu made inside the case hotter so the CPU is hotter as well and the MB is telling the fan to run at a higher RPM.

I doubt it as this happened straightaway and both card and cpu were at idle with nothing stressing it. Case was also opened and no hot air came out.

But thanks for the suggestion :)

Ok so after much investigation, well a click of cpu-z the h81 mobo is feeding my non oc 4790k a massive 1.3v just to hit 4ghz :(that's what the chip needs for 4.8!

Looks like new mobo is imminent!

Some boards had a habit of throwing silly volts at devils canyon chips without a bios update.

Ok thanks, didn't know that, might be worth a shot later although it's going to be replaced in a few days so I can just not game for a bit!

so probably it was doing the same without the GPU but you didn't notice before.
