CPU fan switches off after 4-5 seconds

I have just installed a new mobo/cpu/ram/gfx card into my computer.

I switch it on, and the system will power up and everything seems normal. However after 4-5 seconds, you hear the CPU fan getting slower, and it becomes obvious that the fan is no longer being powered and after a few seconds it will stop completely.

The system appears to be booting up as normal, but as soon as I noticed the CPU fan wasn't spinning I switched off the system.

I have a 500W PSU, and installed the following h/w:

AMD 3700+
1gb 3200 Corsair RAM
DFI Lanparty mothrboard
6600gt (Club 3d)

I've tried using a different fan connector on the motherboard, and tried unplugging the HDD, but still had the same problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated - thanks!

Ah I see, however if I gently tap the fan wit my finger it will stop and will not start up again.

Is it safe to let the computer boot up then seeing as the fan with only be spinning very slowly and might stop?

The fan should be fine because a few weeks ago when I had it on a previous motherboard it woked fine.

Can anybody confirm whether it is safe to switch on the system until it at least boots in Windows, or the BIOS so I can see if there is any type of temperature monitering thing activated?

I looked up the specification for the mobo, and it does have this:

Monitors CPU/system/chipset temperature
Monitors 12V/5V/3.3V/Vcore/Vbat/5Vsb/Vchipset/Vdram voltages
Monitors the speed of the CPU fan, Fan 2 and chipset fan
CPU Overheat Protection function monitors CPU temperature during system boot-up

Is this likely to be why the fan is powering down?
