CPU For 1080p Mkv

Here is My problem Ive got my pc hooked up to my lcd..and all 720p and all 1080p mkvs that are dxva compliant play fine with mpc hc using there mpc video decoder which offloads all the work on my Radeon 4670 but the 1080p files that dont use hardware acceleration...my cpu spikes in the 90s where as it doesn't go above 30 with dxva...so what cpu do i need to correct this??..
My Current Specs are:
E2180 running stock
4gb ddr2 Geil ultra
P35C-DS3R
ati radeon 4670 512mb
windows 7 7100 x64
2 Hard drives

Also will i need to upgrade my psu which is a silverstone strider 400w when i get a new cpu??..thanks in advance
 
Overclock the E2180? Also what codec is being used when gpu hardware acceleration isn't used? And do you mind using a codec like coreavc which allows high-def content to be played on worse hardware with a very small reduction in quality (usually unnoticeable). FFDshow or libavcodec (which is used by mpc i believe) is a 100% reference decoder and hence is intensive and also doesn't utilise 2 cores.

I'm running an E5200 in my HTPC using only the onboard HDMI (No PCI-E graphics card) and 720p MKVs sit around 30-35% and 1080p MKVs sit around 50%
 
What Ghost101 said, overclock that sucker.
My old e2180 OC'd to 3.2Ghz had more than enougth grunt to playback 1080p.
 
i know zilch about overclocking and im afraid if i try it will result in a unstable system which is the last thing i want..ive tried coreavc but the picture quality isn't what im looking for...with ffdshow i can get the best picture quality but ffdshow doesn't use dxva...h264 is the codec being used throughout..cheers
 
I had a few encodes that simply wouldnt play ball under DXVA with my old ATI card.
With my new Nvida + CoreAVC + CUDA it offloads these files perfectly :D
Now thats obviously not what you want to hear but there it is.
So you have 3 choises realy, OC the e2180, buy a new CPU (e5200) or join the darkside and buy a new graphics card.

That's horrific IQ, why the hell are you sharpening THAT much for?! The image is sharp as with 1080 anyway!

My 2.4Ghz C2D Macbook Pro plays 1080p HD 10+Mb/sec files fine, and thats in OS X without GPU acceleration. Overclock that thing to 2.4 (easy peasy, stock volts should do it) and you will be laughing.
 
What's wrong with the CPU spiking into the 90's? So long as it doesn't skip frames I don't see a problem.

I'd suggest using CoreAVC as it uses much less processing power. You can still use ffdshow to adjust the colour and sharpening etc.

Though it has to be said really... Don't know how you can watch movies like that, your screenshot looks hideous! No point bothering with 1080p in the first place if you are going to butcher it with that much post-processing.
 
Not only is that a crap image but it's also not even filling your screen cos some setting is wrong somewhere. I use Media Player Classic x64 and ffdshow and I get a great picture with minimal CPU usage even without DXVA. Use EVR Custom and bicubic resizing for the best image IMO, no post-processing is necessary (except for 5.1 mixdown to 2.0 if you only have stereo speakers or headphones).
 
To answer the original question either get a Core 2 Duo 5200 as that has a lot more grunt, or overclock the 2180. 2180's can all reach 2.6Gig without any real tweaking, just change the fsb from 800 (200 in the bios) to 1066 (266 in the bios) and it will give you the extra power you desire without any chance of problems (most of these chips will do well over 3gig, some as high as 3.6gig)

Also seriously you need to look at your video settings as that picture is dire. They don't spend a fortune remastering films into 1080p quality for no reason, your settings ruin the intended effect :(
 
Perhaps its the sharpening postprocess filter that is using all your CPU? Try turning it off, you really don't want it for 1080p content.
