hey all i have been reading around about whats due this year and im still confused as to pricing and whats good to wait for.

im currently struggling in al games on a dual core and would very much like a new one by may 2010.it has to last and is purely for gaming, what ****es me off most about cpu's right now is the ability to struggle in games like crysis, arma II, bad company 2 and whatever else is due in 2010 like the new crysis engine.

http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,...RAM-tested-benefits-for-GTA-4/Reviews/?page=2

a core i7 @ 4.00GHZ and a GTX 295 gets 50fps in GTA IV and there is still talk about being cpu bound.i had my eye on a i7 @ 4.0-4.2 and a 5870 but now im not so convinced on the i7 bit.

i find it doubtful any worthwhile amd cpus will come in 2010, they have 6 cores due but can anyoone really see it pushing out the core i7?

also whats the deal with the 6 core intel i9's being extreme editions? no mainstream cpu's? :(

i know some will say u dont need more than 4 cores but i disagree having watched us go from 2-4 its only a matter of time and right now with high end gaming requirements id rather be safe than sorry.id very much like to build a rig that can finally play crysis @ 1080p max with 4x AA 16xAF with 60fps 90% of the time.

GTA IV is probably poorly optimised seeing as its primarily a console game and it still doesnt use 100% cpu usage on a stock i7.

at best with 4 cores enabled you will get 75% cpu usage.

most games wont even come anywhere close to that

i handle GTA IV fine at 1920x1200 with the rig in my sig. The only thing I would say is get 4GB+ of Ram, but if your going socket 1366 I assume you'll have 6GB.

I was testing my RAM a couple of weeks ago and GTA IV had a major drop in performance, virtually un playable with 2GB of RAM.

It's very unlikely that your cpu is the problem if you're struggling in so many games. However as you haven't bothered to tell us what your current processor is, we can't be certain.

It is likely that you just want a new graphics card.

sorry about not giving info on what my current system is, i was knackered when i posted that!

im currently at a complete ram freq wall

E6300 @ 2800mhz
4GBgeil DDR2 800
radeon 4890 1gb

3d mark 06 score was around 11000- 12000

ive tried and tried but with 4gb of that ram it wont budge an inch over 2.8, some games are fine like res 5 but others run like a dog (BC2).i could drop in a Q6600 but it would cost £100 + new ram and cooler £100 so it wouldnt make much sense when an i7 cpu alone would cost the same.

id rather build something with a backbone thats not going to be cpu limited with the 2nd revision of fermi or a 2gb dx 11 card from ATI.

this is where 6 cores start to excite me! putting one of those in a rig at 4.00ghz u can be sure your good to go for the future, im talking possibly single cards in 2012 that are going to offer the same performance as 3 5870's(by moores law)

Can you give use the spec of your motherboard as well? If it is decent enough, may be you can just put get a 2nd hand Q6600 or Q9550/Q9650. I don't really see much problem for you current rams...so don't think you need to change them.

ok my mobo and ram are

GA-965p-DS3 (supports Q6600 only via new bios)
GIEL DDR2 6400 or DDR2 800

its a dust clogged monstrosity anyways i want it gone out of my sight!

id just like to know whats best for 2010 and whats going to be affordable and when? i want 6 core's and something thats going to not bottleneck the ATI HD6XXX series in 2011.im going to be putting in a PSU with 2x 8 pin so even in 2011 they use those monsterous amounts of power from 2 8 pin pci-e ill happily have 1000watts of corsair goodness via the £128 HX850

i want to build for the future this year around summer time but on a budget of £1000 for the base without graphics so thats at most £250 on a CPU.
