Okay considering upgrading and people have pointed me to move from my 1055t to intel, price looks a bit scary due to needing a motherboard aswell to do that (currently ga-970a-ud3 am3+ board)
Which cpus from amd and intel will see my 7990 reach its potential and if its am3+ would my current mobo suffice? There must be soemthing worth upgrading to on the am3+ side?!

Long question i know but struggling with looking at prices and all the different numbers from both sides.

I'm not massively familiar with that board, but if it's AM3+ and if it's capable, I'd just slam an FX8320 in it, you won't always get the most out of the 7990 with the FX8320 (More times than not, you won't be, but you'll get more out of it than your 1055T does) , but for price/performance, there's no beating it.

Though a 8320 will get more (than you currently get) your 7990, it won't get the most/all. For that you'll have to switch to Intel, it will cost a lot more though. .

As above, a newer AMD chip will get more from it but to it get all of it's performance an Intel system is needed.

Doesn't need to be expensive either to be honest.

You can keep your current memory.

Buy a motherboard from the B-Grade section and then a CPU.

It's overpriced as hell, it's just a clocked FX8320 with horrendous TDP and power draw. Terrible CPU really.

AM3+ is dead, won't be seeing any new products.

Interesting, Might save up for longer and go for a full intel and new decent mobo and closed loop water system.....the pc isnt struggling but frustrating knowing its not at its best.

The price difference between just getting an 8320 and swapping to Intel is just no where near worth the increase in performance you will get in games.

The biggest differences between an 8320 and a higher up Intel i7 is more pronounced in productivity applications, rather than games. People need to stop with the "only Intel" nonsense, so many people grossly over-exaggerate the performance of Intel CPUs in games.

Some people have never owned that much GPU power to be able to give an opinion.

Some people give opinions but cannot debate for soup.

Option 1: Cheapest - Get a 8320, maybe flash BIOS (check mobo supports)

Option 2: Expensive - save for an i7 rig and utilise the balance of power to last for a good 3 years.

Pick the option that suits you.

Well said, quite apt for these parts but seems to go in the recursive cycle of ignorance is all I have noticed.

Which games do you play and at what resolution?

Also factors like this are important, no point in having a demon of a GPU if your gaming on 800x600 CRT.

my [email protected] ghz runs my 7990@stock fine, some games it sits around 80%usage in both GPU cores but not often.

if you play a lot of the AMD Gaming Evolved games (i do myself) then the 8320 OC'd with the 7990 will eat through it :D

only game im not happy with it Rome TW 2, but its running crap on all systems atm
