CPU for a gaming build

If you don't run Eyefinity, i would say get two 7970s or R9-280Xs. Nothing will beat that vale at that performance. Will be in the lower end of your GPU budget as well.

Ok so my next question is, do I overclock a lower CPU (I5 for example) or spend the extra money on a higher CPU and overclock as required?

I have already pointed out the benefits and negatives to both mate. At your budget level the I5 is not even worth considering. Get a 4770k and take the safe (but not as much fun) option or rock an AMD, clock the **** out of it and take a risk on next gen console ports coming over to the PC with full 8 core support AND an architecture match.

If you are confident enough to overclock, get a 'K' processor from intel or the 8320 if you want an AMD octo, and you can clock both toy our hearts content. If you get a 'K' processor, pair it with a Z77 motherboard.

Sorry Bud, Trying to read too many posts, Not taking it all on board right away. I'm with you now though. I'm leaning toward the more fun overclocking option :D

Cheers bud. I'm going to have a look at the prices of both, but I am leaning more toward AMD given the new consoles are fitted out with AMD/ATI tech

Just know there is an ever so slight risk that games may not mimic the consoles, leaving the AMD trailing.

However, as I said it's a slight risk. IE - a really, really tiny one, given that the game devs themselves have pretty much said avoid Intel for next gen at the mid-high price point. This article may offer some reassurance.

Take your time. Personally I would wait for BF4 (which is the next big hitting title coming out soon) and see how it performs on the two different systems. Then you can use that as a loose guide, given loads of Frostbite games are en route :)

Just about to pop off for an hour so I may not reply.
But I wanted to thank you all for your input, its given me a lot to think about, regarding what I'm confident doing and where I think the gaming market will take us.
Thanks again :)
(and sorry for the inflammatory initial title, I guess its like starting a PS3 or XBOX argument lol)

I suppose having too many posts to read is better than none if you are looking for opinions :D

Even if the next gen games wont be optimized for AMD, it will still be capable as a gaming CPU for some time. Considering the budget, i personally would go for a 4770k build with two toxic 280x's in Xfire.
