So my other half's i7 860 setup has finally given up the ghost after many years of use. We're looking to replace it for something cheap but which will last a couple of years atleast.

I suggested 2nd hand to save money but we agreed that we'd rather buy brand new to give us some warranty coverage.

She mostly plays League of Legends, but is also playing PU:Battlegrounds at the moment and a couple of MMOs like WoW. Graphics wise she has my old GTX970 so we're fine there. We're also limited to Micro ATX motherboards

Options I've been looking at, these include the cheapest motherboard and no memory (Don't need memory):

1) AMD FX 8300 - £134
2) Intel Pentium G4560 - £112
3) AMD Ryzen 5 1400 - £229

I want to do Ryzen 5 to have something new to play with and because I think it's the best option, but she's hesitant to spend nearly £100 more when it's unlikely she will see the performance difference over the FX in the games she plays. Is it going to be worth the extra premium for Ryzen? Or would the AMD FX be fine for the money?

It also needs to be a semi upgrade over a stock i7 860, as there's no point going backwards.

Tips?

Ryzen's DDR4 so you'd surely need memory?
The Pentium's a no go from an i7 860, and frankly I'd say that about an FX83 for the uses outlined.

It has to be the Ryzen 5 1400 for me.

AMD Ryzen 5 1400, It like an i7 for £150+ less. Also, the AM4 socket is going to be used for 4 years so you could upgrade the CPU a few years down the line.

The G4560 is a great little chip, I use one in my HTPC. There was a thread a while back about using one in a gaming rig, it fared well.

Without a shadow of doubt the Ryzen 1400, both the FX8300 and the G4560 will if are not already very bogged down by a lack of IPC and threads.

Yes the Ryzen chip costs a lot more but it is a far better investment, there is no point in saving £100 for a Dual Core Pentium when you will suffer from bad performance.

Yeah went for the 1600 in the end which should last a couple of years. I'm using it as a test to see whether I move to the 1700 myself.
