Hello,

My head has hit the sack and honestly not sure what to go for. Upgrading from an i7 920 and mainly only play games like rts and fps

I got 2 choices

6700K
5820K

I got a GTX 970 to go with these cpu.

In my shoe what would you go for?

5820k hands down, you'll enjoy the same performance per clock and have some extra cores for no significant extra money (if prices change so this is much more expensive then this could change of course, it's the overpricing of the 6700k that makes the 5820k so great an option)

5820K is the route I chose. It just makes more sense given the current pricing. Realistically you can't go wrong with either chip of course but since the 6700K's IPC improvement over Haswell is minimal there isn't that much to be gained there.

However if you're planning to overclock, the 6700K will likely hit a higher speed more easily but I wouldn't expect there to be a huge amount in it. If you're going to overclock a 5820K you need to have some half decent cooling setup, more so than you would for a 6700K.

The Skylake CPUs are really not very good value when X99 setups are so closely priced. Wait until the Skylake price drops about £50+ or go for one of the 5820k/X99 bundles TBH.

Also more cores is going to make a bigger difference in future for gaming, especially with DX12.

No need for an i7 just for a gaming rig.

Get the Skylake 6600k, a mid range motherboard and 8gb of ram, sorted.

GPU is king for a gaming rig, I would always save money on cpu by sticking with i5 and investing as much as possible on the graphics card.

Very much this. i5 and fast graphics for bang per buck. X99 for e-peen.

16gb for GTA5 - With 8gb I used to get low memory warnings

Never had that problem here! Maxes out at just over 7GB system memory with GTA running.

At OP i think 8520k is the better route as your talking 2-3% faster/performance from the skylake in games which is nothing really FPS wise however in games where more cores are used you have 50% more cores 4 extra threads and GTA loves more cores so the extra cores = a lot more performance than 2-3% could be easily 20-30% more performance.

And your set for DX12 as well as that likes more cores.

Yea I agree everyones saying get the i7 x99 but in reality better off sinking the extra £100 in to the gpu and sticking with an i5.

X99 is better for future proofing because of the extra cores which DX12 will utilise.

If you're looking to keep this for a few years, X99 no question.

+1 . Yep, in games you will never be able to tell whether you have a 6600k, 6700k or 5820k.
Get the cheapest one.

Overclock the 920? If not then grab a cheap - around £60 - Xeon chip if your existing motherboard will take it...

X5650 is the best value for money if your motherboard supports it and you do other multi-threaded tasks like 3D design or video encoding and the likes. However, as someone pointed out, you're not going to notice much difference without looking at statistics, other than maybe a better minimum frame rate which is easier to spot.

I went from a 920 to a 5820K. It is only used for gaming. But I wanted a future proof machine and going down the X99 route was a better choice for me. I did wait until Skylake came out to see if I would benefit, but I guess my mind was already made up before the release.

I have a R9 295x2 running in the machine as well.
